Character Standards

You may send in a character for Storyteller approval at any time. If you wish to participate in the ULAG (Unmoderated Little Asia Game) Chronicle, you must be approved. Few if any ULAG Storytellers will allow "walk-in's". Our game is called "unmoderated" but this is in reference to our chat site. At the same time, we are not as demanding as many other online roleplaying games. We are fairly tolerant and lax, but do have certains standards by which players must abide. The exact details of these standards are the Storytellers' counsel.

It is recommended that you offer a "starting level" character. The reason is simple: the majority of the ULAG troupe prefers low to medium-powered characters. The Storytellers gear their plotlines' difficulty and the power of their NPC antagonists based on this fact. Playing an exceptionally powerful character in the ULAG Chronicle then can disrupt smooth game flow. This is not to say that a character above "starting level" will not be approved. How high above basic character creation the ULAG Storytellers will approve, however, is private counsel. It is suggested you submit your character as you desire and await feedback. It will always be prompt: a week, two at most, before you hear back. Cam is the Head Storyteller and the one you should submit your character to by e-mail. He pre-approves the character and that should usually do it. He passes the character sheet onto the appropiate Troupe Storyteller thereafter. Non-starting level characters may end up rejected by the Troupe Storyteller, as Storytellers all have individual standards. In most cases, Cam will contact you about any changes that may need to be made on the character.

Below are found the formats by which Cam requires you to e-mail your character data. This is how the sheets are kept in his files and to save the overworked Head Storyteller time, it is most appreciated if you follow this format (thanks!). In any event, no character will be approved until all of his pertinent data is sent. This includes all appropiate character Traits and any background information required. For most characters, a simple and brief history is all that's needed. It need only be 3-5 sentences long, a mere paragraph. Longer histories are always happily accepted. Mage characters require a bit more background data. The Storytellers require brief paragraphs defining the mage's Path/Destiny, a description of his Avatar -- how it interacts with the character and how it appears to the character (in Seekings/visions), and a description of the character's magickal paradigm/style. Again, these paragraphs need only be 3-5 sentences but more is fine.

For specifics on what Traits or background data is required of character submissions, please refer to (and utilize) the blank formats below. Categories that may not be clear to some players are defined beneath all of the formats.

1. Status refers to the character's position (if any) in the Court of Infinite Ages. Rank refers to the character's magickal ability (refer to the Chi'n Ta webpage, here).
2. Apparent Age versus Real Age should be fairly obvious. Awakening is the year that the character Awakened.
3. Resonance is listed here mainly for those playing Revised Mage. Explain briefly the Social and magickal effects your character's Resonance may have.
4. List the character's Foci Sphere-by-Sphere. Depending on your edition use, also note which foci are "necessary" (as based on Arete score) and note if any foci are unique.
5. Hanging Effects refers to any perpetual spells or trigger Effects the character may have cast upon himself. List the rote, what it does, and how many casting successes the character has for it. Any vulgar Effect kept hanging will also cause the character to take on (semi-permanent til the spell ends) Paradox, and depending on its nature, cause Pattern leakage, so beware.
6. Under Avatar/Path, describe the character's Avatar and the character's perceived Path versus "true" Destiny (which is, in general, the character's life goals versus the player's goals for the character). This can be squeezed into a single 3-5 sentence paragraph if the player wishes.
7. Under Paradigm/Style, describe the character's magical methods of magick, ideas on where magick comes from, how it must or should be done according to the character's belief, and whatever else the character might have a belief about (particularly Paradox). This, too, can be stated succintly in a 3-5 sentence paragraph, but expansion will do you, the player, much good in providing a basis for more effective portrayal of your character.

Background:

1. Status refers to the character's position in the Court of Infinite Ages. Clan Duty is the assigned job that the character is to perform for the Hengeyokai Clan (for details, go here).
2. Bete would be the character's core species: Garou, Corax, Ratkin, et cetera. Tribe/Camp would be, for example, Hakken (Garou) or Tengu (Corax).
3. Under Auspice/Path/Aspect, list the character's species Auspice (or the equivelent) and then, if the character is to join the CoIA, the Beast-Court Auspice he would most likely follow.
4. Renown is listed here as the Beast-Court's categories, since any hengeyokai who joins the CoIA must follow the Path of the Emerald Mother. Renown should begin as the character's minimum requirements for the Rank in question (so 3 dots of Renown if the character is Rank 1, and 7 if starting off Rank 2). If the character is not hengeyokai for the Court, obviously, list the appropiate species-pertinent Renown instead. List only permanent Renown scores, since temporary scores fluctuate too often.
5. First Change means the date, the year, that the character underwent her First Change.

Background:

1. Kun Shou refers to the character's "Temper" -- hsien-jin or hsien-tsu. Rank is the character's standing in the whole of Shinma society, a score of 1-20 based on adding the character's permanent Yin and Yang Chi scores.
2. The hsien's Court refers to the outer Shinma society he may member. If he belongs to none, he is lumped into the Wu Hsien.
3. Kun Shou is listed again under age as the date -- the year -- that the character underwent the Kun Shou and became hsien.
4. Hanging I Chih -- list what spells the hsien may have running perpetually. List their effects and duration. Keep in mind that Soren, the ULAG Changeling Troupe Storyteller, has specific requirements regarding hanging and trigger I Chih, so it may be best to consult him before finalizing this section.

2. Life, Death, and Regret are listed as they are discussed in the Wraith corebook.
3. Death is listed a second time to mean the date, the year, that the character died, was Reaped, and became a ghost.

1. Kinfolk should include what Changing Breed and specific Tribe or Camp to which they're related.
2. Special Abilities refers to Qiao, Psychic Numina, hedge magic Paths/Rituals, and any other special, mystical powers that the mortal may have.
3. All characters must generate a Virtues and Humanity score, including Kinfolk (even though the Kinfolk book, strangely, left these Traits out, while every other mortal supplement including Project: Twilight, did not!).
4. Review "paradigm/style" under the Mage format above.

Any character type that does not fit these formats, try to find the format that fits best and alter categories as necessary. Send all character data only to Cam.

Character Sheet Updates

As this is an unmoderated troupe, constant character sheet updates are unneeded nor are they even wanted. Players are trusted enough not to have their characters constantly babysat. The point of character approval is to give the Storytellers a good idea of the sort of character they have to deal with and can create their Stories to better fit the characters. It has nothing to do with making sure no one's cheating. We already know you don't cheat, because this game prides itself on keeping cheaters, twinks, and powergamers out of the mix in the first place. Thus, character sheet updates will be called for once, possibly twice, a year. Don't bother sending Cam updates until he asks for them; otherwise, they will be skimmed over at best, and likely deleted instead of recorded.

Thank you.
