The After Party
My heart was pounding as I waited for the muscle-bound Schwarznegger clone on the door to turn me away. I could feel Val’s fingers digging into my elbow and Anna shuffling her feet behind me. His silence was deafening, his eyes flicking back and forth across the clipboard he held in his hand.
"Is there a problem?" Anna leaned forward and smiled at him.
"No, no, I just…your names aren’t on the list girls." He sighed. My heart stopped. Something fell over inside my body. I think it was my kidneys. He continued. "Listen, I know you girls wouldn’t be pulling my leg here, trying to gatecrash, would you?"
"Us? No." I said feebly. " You can call someone if you need to."
"Well, you look trustworthy to me." He suddenly smiled, his face breaking into deep folds of flesh as he did so. He unhooked the red rope than ran in front of his shins (yes, he was that tall) and stepped aside. Beaming, Val, Anna and myself stepped curtly past him and gave him a nod of appreciation, trying to look cool, calm and collected. On the other side of the doors it was a different story.
"No way!" Val gaped. "We’re in! How easy was that?"
"It’s the cleavage. Works every time." I grinned back, looking down at our daring outfits.
"Oh…my…god!" Anna said slowly as we all turned and looked through the second set of doors. The room was dark and filled with bodies. Moving, writhing, dancing bodies. Most of whom were recognizable simply because I’d seen them on TV so many times I didn’t need so much as a strobe light to look at their faces. We gaped at the crowd for what felt like an eternity.
"Coming through." A deep voice spoke behind us. We all jumped and turned.
"Anna?" The face looked back at her bemused.
"Vin?" Anna drew in a sharp breath. She’d met Vin Diesel at the last movie premiere we had gatecrashed and was astounded that he remembered. Remembered her face anyway. That was 2 years ago. Last time it had been very dark and not so much with the eye contact. Val and myself turned away quickly as Anna flushed. "What are you doing here? The press release said you were still on location"
"I was hoping you were gonna be here." He smirked and held out his arm for her. "I would have called but we didn’t exactly exchange numbers last time…"
His droning voice faded into the distance as they disappeared into the crowd.
"How does she do that?" I asked. "She got him again!"
"Tell me about it." Val rolled her eyes.
"You can talk. I believe it was you who disappeared into the sunset with Paul Walker at the Varsity Blues premiere." I looked at her. Her eyes sparkled and she smiled.
"OK, it’s your turn tonight." She nodded. "He’s all yours. Its only fair."
"Unless we share." I snorted. Val grimaced and we both pulled a face at each other. "Maybe not." I added.
It was about half an hour later that I propped myself up against the bar to get myself a Jack Daniel’s refill. The barman was busying himself with opening a new bottle as I shredded myself a beermat.
"That usually means you’re sexually frustrated." Someone spoke to my right. My hands froze and the mat fell back to the bar. I knew that voice. I raised my head and turned, looking him straight in the eyes.
"What?" I asked. My voice was steadier than I expected.
"I said that’s usually a sign of sexual frustration." He repeated. His eyes had locked with mine. I hate when people do that. Especially when the eyes looking back are about as blue they come.
"Well, I…" I looked back at the barman as he strategically placed my fresh JD on the tattered beermat. I picked up the glass and knocked the drink back, holding it out for the barman to refill again. After composing myself, I turned back to my right. There was no one there. I looked around the dimly lit room and saw his blonde hair disappearing towards the bathrooms. Should I follow? Did he think I was a nerd and keep on walking? God I’m such a numbnuts. I was shaking like a leaf as Val approached. She burst out laughing when I told her what had happened.
"Don’t worry, he’ll be back." She smirked. "You’re in. He’s been watching you for the past 20 minutes"
"Yeah right, I should have just told him I was desperate and could take me on the bar if he pleased." I groaned. Val laughed again and started away.
"Where are you going?" I frowned.
"Brendan Fraser is here." She wriggled her eyebrows. "I’m going in for the kill."
