Although there are countless versions ofDixie, this version was written in 1859 bya member of Bryant's Minstrels, Daniel Emmett of Ohio. First performed in New York, it nonetheless became a great favorite throughout the South. Yet, given its origins, it should not come as a surprise that Dixie was Abraham Lincoln's favorite song. This was the most famous of the countless variations of the original song heard during the war.
The origin of the name is uncertain. One theory is that Dixie is a mispronunciation of the old $10 notes from French Louisiana (known as II dixies 'J leading Louisiana to be known as Dixie Land, a term which later came to include the entire South.
