Fluency in Math Facts Fluency means how fast a person can retrieve facts to current memory from working memory. This retrieval should take only nano seconds or micro seconds. Mathematic Facts Fluency means finding complement numbers: doubling, halving, factoring, multiplying, completing operations on two-digit numbers, calculating simple fractions, analyzing and synthetizing numbers under 100, finding GCF and LCM, etc. There are two kinds of memory: RAM, random access memory and storage memory, HDD, FDD or CD in computers. RAM is woking memory within the CPU (Central Processing Unit) at high speed. Howver, Its capacity is limited. On the other hand, outside storage memory has a much larger capacity and operates at low speed. Whenever the CPU needs more memory, part of storage memory is transferred to the inside working memory (RAM). That is called loading. Human beings' brains are similar to computer memory and processing systems. Having fluency in math facts is the same as having a large capacity working memory in a computer structure. The more working memory (RAM) the computer has, the more capable it is to process at high speed. Training in fluency of math facts makes a person increase concentrating power, rapid calculating ability, and estimation skills. It leads to sucess in mathematics. Using a calculator (machine) will not substitute for fluency in math facts. Inputting and outputting takes at least one second compared with micro or nano seconds of fluency capability. Creativity for planning, designing, and solving problems requires high speed fluency or fast communication between the brain's working memory and processing unit. Even though a person understands how to calculate and has some fluency in math facts, he/she still needs to practice. Understanding is not enough for fluency: repitition creates perfection. I see many students who are bored and hate mathematics because of their lack in math facts fluency. Fluency in math facts will give anyone the ability to analyze and to synthesize number structure as well as to improve concentration. When students improve their fluency and feel successful, they are no longer bored nor do they hate mathematics. Gaining fluency in math facts requires mentally manipulating problems using worksheets (paper work) and computer programs (CD for repeating & interactive practice). You can purchase such materials from the store or contact me via email or telephone. Parts of problems that can be used to gain fluency are available on my website for reference.
