Zapatistas, In Their Own Words. 28 Pages. Half Size. 1.5 oz. $1.00.
"At Midnight on the 1st of January 1994, NAFTA-The North American Free Trade Agreement between Mexico, the US and Canada-came into force. Barely two hours later, thousands of Indians armed with machetes, clubs and a few guns occupied four of the major towns in the Chiapas, a province on Mexico's southern border with Guatelmala, and declared war on the Mexican government. Two dozen police and an unknown number of rebels ded in the assault. The following day, Mexican President Carlos Salinas dismissed the uprising as the work of "A local group of professionals of violence, probably foreigners" and launched a massive attack upon the rebels using tanks, Swiss aeroplanes, US helicopters and 15,00 troops. Nobody knowns the full extent of the violence that followed, but therre were reports of civilian killings, unlawful detentions, torture and summary executions. The rebels soon revealed however that they were indians of different ethnic groups calling themselves Ejercito Zapatista de Liberacion Nacional (EZLN). Rebelling not only against the president and the army, they appealed for an end to 500 years of oppression, and 40 years of development. They wanted to reclaim their commons and to regenerate their own forms of goverance. It was time to say "Basta", Enough!"

"Prisons serve the same purpose for women as they do for men; they are instruments of social control. However, the imprisonment of women, as well as all other aspects of our lives, takes place against a backdrop of patriarchal relationships."
"This essay explores how prisons have historically served to enforce and reinforce women's traditional roles, to foster dependency and passivity, baering in mind that it is not just incarcerated women who are affected. Rather, the social stigmas and conditions of incarceration serve as a warning to women to stay within 'the proper female sphere."
