Archaeologists have found evidence of adhesives being used as early as 4000 BC. These glues were made from tar and tree sap. At about 2000 BC, the first references in literature to adhesives appeared. The Egyptians seemed to have utilized glue a lot. Evidence found in tombs of Pharaohs show exactly how they were able to use it. The Greeks and Romans futher advanced usage of glue. Their glues were made from such things as egg whites, blood, bones, hide, milk, cheese, vegetables, and grains. It wasn't until the 1700's that adhesives became a business. The first commercial factory was created in Holland. By 1750 the first glue patent was filed in Britain for an adhesive made from fish. The industry started booming. Adhesives started out being made from natural rubber, animal bones, fish, starch, and casein (milk protien). The Industrial Revolution and World War II brought out many new plastics and rubbers that improve adhesives even more. Today adhesives are used everywhere, in industries as well as everyday items. They can be found everywhere from cars to stamps to photography to cigarettes to can labels.
