I am inspired by the news and headlines at
the KofC Supreme Council’s web site (http://kofc.org/index.cfm)
and at how we are directly affected by so many of the issues and demands of
living our Catholicity as Knights from a local level through an international
level.
First, concerning Respect Life
issues: I strongly encourage each of
you to vote the “Gospel of Life” at the ballot box on Election
Day. Legislators must sometimes
compromise to get part of what they want and tolerate part of what they don’t
want. As voters and as Knights, our
choice is much clearer, however. As
Mary’s Knights, we must take a stand for life – especially for those who cannot
stand for themselves. We must pray for
guidance and not compromise. (Also see,
http://kofc.org/columbia/september2000/vote.htm)
Also concerning Respect Life, you
will see in this newsletter that we have changed our business meeting from
Thursday, November 9 to Thursday, November 16 (for November only and visit our
web site at http://knightsofcolumbus10850.org
to view the calendar). On Thursday,
November 9, with St. Joseph’s Respect Life Ministry, our Council will present pharmacist and author Lloyd Duplantis
and St. Joseph’s own Dr. Grace Valente for a respect life program including a
discussion on contraception and natural family planning (NFP). Now some of you may say that this is not for
you for various reasons. But for
younger couples this presentation may be critical to your lives. Even if your children are long gone from
your nest, your presence and support will
inspire others. Yes, they may
ask, “What are you doing here for NFP?” A simple respectful reply such as, “I’m
supporting my church, my fellow parishioners, and my council”, will certainly
be respected. The talk will be held in
the Cafeteria at St. Joseph’s Elementary School on Thursday, November 9th, at 7
PM. Thanks to our KC Respect Life
couple, Bill and Marie Burns for assisting in this event. Questions? Please call Russ or Carron Tooke,
268-3349. I will introduce the speakers
that evening so please come out and support your council in this co-sponsored
event.
Second,
here are some thoughts on membership specific to our local council and
patterned after comments from the new Supreme Knight, Carl Anderson: Membership
must continue to be of the greatest priority if we are to continue in our
efforts to compliment and contribute to the existing ministries of our parishes
and contribute to the needy. Our potential is only now being realized. The changing demographics within the Church
and society are reflected in our local parishes of St. Joseph, San Jose, and
Holy Family and require new outreach if our Order in Mandarin is to continue to
grow. We must open wide the doors
to our council to all Catholic men from all of our parishes. We have nothing less than a moral
obligation to realistically offer every eligible Catholic man the opportunity
and the privilege of membership in the Knights of Columbus. As Jacques says, “Just ask!” (To see SK Anderson’s remarks, please see
your November Columbian Magazine or visit http://kofc.org/columbia/november2000/supremenovember2000.htm
.)
Congratulations to all 20 Knights
receiving their second degree in October on the 4th Thursday. We are with you as you continue your journey
to full knighthood.
Finally, special thanks to our Ladies Auxiliary for their support. Please encourage all of your wives to join in the fun and efforts of this new “ministry”. As always, thank you for being a Knight of Columbus in Council #10850. Vivat Jesus! Fraternally, Kevin
Deputy Grand Knight
by Jacques Aubertin, Deputy Grand Knight and Membership
Director
The good news is that we have already reached our
membership quota for the 2000-2001 Fraternal Year. But we need more! As you
remember, our goal is to recruit 100 new members during this year, ending on
June 30, 2001. We only have 12, thus
need another 88…!
Our next
First Degree will be on December 14, here, at St. Joseph. Talk to your relatives, co-workers,
neighbors, and invite them to join the Knights of Columbus. With your help, our Council will grow stronger
and we will be able to accomplish more.
Remember, JUST ASK!
On
another note, do not miss our Business meeting in November, as we will unveil
the plans for our Christmas Family as well as the plans for the Altar Server of
the Year.
Fraternally yours,
Would you like to receive less
paper? Save a tree? Then please send your electronic mail
address to kevin@boodro.com to receive an electronic e-mail reminder that the
monthly newsletter is available on-line or an e-mail copy of the
newsletter.
Don’t have an e-mail address? Do you have a fax machine on a dedicated
fax line? If your fax is available in
the evenings then we can fax your newsletter to you monthly. Just fax your name and fax number to
904-292-3068 and we’ll add you to our monthly fax list.
THANKS!
