Building Scale Models :
It takes a lot of patience to build a nice scale model. It normally took me a few months just to complete a kit. You will need other tools like airbrush, paint brushes, enamel paint, acrylic paint, thinner, cement, cutter, files, tweezer, and sandpaper.
I like to use Tamiya Acrylic paint for the painting job. It is easy to mix and cleanup during the building process as the paint is water-based.
For kits, my prefered brand is Tamiya, DML and Verlinden. They built really good quality kits in my opinion. In the past, i also built Italeri, Airfix and Revell models.
To get a more realistic look, you will need to readup the history of the model you are building. Old photos are the most helpful. They provided clues on building a more accurate model. You will need to master the technique of dry brushing and weathering effect so that the model will have the "worn" look. I also readup on the scale modeler magazines by Challenge Publications, inc. and The Verlinden Way series books. There are a lot of good references inside to get you started.
In Singapore, you can get plastic model kits from various specialized shop like Central Hobby Plus in the Le Meridien Hotel Shopping Arcade and The Orchard Store in Hotel Grand Central. The Orchard Store is a very old store. It is established since 1953 in Singapore. Previously, it was situated in The Specialist Centre, just opposite Centrepoint. There are also a wide range of kits in major shopping malls like Isetan and Metro. They carry major brands like Tamiya and Bandai.
Scale Models i had built :
This is the 1:35 Scale 54 mm German "Sentry"/ Ukraine figure from the Verlinden Productions kit which i built.
Verlinden always churn out highly detailed kits which impressed me. The sculpted face for this figure looks very real. This kit is made of resin which is not as easy to work with compared to polystyrene.
The most challenging part in figure painting is the face and the eyes. I had used pinhead needle to paint the eyes. I used oil based paint as a first layer for the face followed by using Tamiya paint for the second and third layer. After the base coat had dried, a wash of thinned dark brown is apply on the face to bring out the face lines. Slight dry brushing is then peformed on the face.
I then painted the coat in different shades of German Grey and Black washes followed by light grey and white dry brushing over the coat. It's Winter! for the German Sentry.
I used oil based paint for the rifle with dark brown washes.
Overall, i am quite satisfied with this kit i completed. Took me a few months just for this small figure using paint brushes only.
