A short story illustratring "fivecritical thinking errors..."
“Bill, for the last time, St. Louis University High School has some of the best test scores in the nation. The reason SLUH continues to have some of the smartest students is that the school is devoted to its current location and refuses to move out west like other local schools, for example, CBC. So, it is obvious that SLUH continues to prosper academically because of their conviction to the neighborhood and resolve not to move.”1 “That may be, but SLUH is a Catholic school and everyone knows that only Catholic people are smart. The majority of students at SLUH are Catholic and they excel academically.”2 “Are you ignorant? We all know that the kids at SLUH are smart. You are a pro-life, pro-Catholic, rosary thumbing, Catholic holy roller! The kids aren’t smart because of they’re Catholic!”3 “Everyone knows that SLUH students are smart because they go to such a good school!”4 “Good school!? It’s a good school because they haven’t moved over the years. Kind of like you, not moving out of your mother’s house for 37 years.”5 1. Non Sequitur-Although the students at SLUH are intelligent and have some of the best test scores in the nation, the reason for this is not because the school hasn’t moved from its current location. 2. False and Vague Premises-Not all Catholics are smart, this is false. Although the majority of students at SLUH are Catholic, this doesn’t equate to the fact that they are smart because of this reason. 3. Ad Hominem-Personal insults are thrown into the conversation. 4. Begging the Question-This is a circular argument, which claims that students at SLUH are smart because the school is academically excellent. 5. Red Herring-To distract from the conversation a completely unrelated, inflammatory subject is brought up to distract everyone from the real issue.
