This past semester has been a great learning experience for me in the area of
morality. At the beginning, I learned, quite simply, why it is important to study
morality. Through the right speech experiment, I was able to examine my own
life and discover areas that could use improvement. Although, as Batholics we
strive to live morally, many of us, namely myself, don't realize how flawed we
really are. However, through the study of other moral systems, it became readily
apparent that most major Faiths have the same basic priciples. This encouraged
me to pursue morality to a greater extent with the knowledge that it is not just
Christians who hold the set of teachings that is taught ot us in America. Also, I
have learned that I should respect other religions more, because of the
commonality of our moral ideals. Studying Jesus' morality has inspired me to do
a better job of reaching out to others in my own life. Even when Jesus wsa faced
with difficult situations, he always dealt with tehm morally. Likewise, when I am
up against a tough choice, I think I'll be more likely ot remember what Jesus
of Jesus by giving me a definite process to approach moral decisions. Thinking
through a problem and looking at the possible outcomes really helps in day to day
choices, but, it also helps when looking at the big problems that may eventually
confront me. I have discovered the "user-guide" for Catholics in the Catechism,
which is a great reference tool for guidance with dilemmas in life. I really
enjoyed applying some of the knowledge I gained to areas of modern moral
debate and looking at morality in war, medicine, and business. I've realized just
how complicated end-of-life decisions can be and how corruption in big
corporations is certainly not a necessary for success. In conclusion, I feel that
the study of morality in this past semester has given me tools I need to live a
better, more moral life for years to come. |
