cactus
Some years ago I went to Las Vegas during which I visited the Grand Canyon (during the 4 days 1,000 miles were put on the rental car). At the gift shop I bought the seeds of a cactus. It was packaged in a plastic ball container (like the ones they put a prize [or chotchka] in when you put 25 or 50 cents in the candy machines), with the seeds glued onto a base of absorbant material (to retain water). This is glued onto the cover and the clear dome is like a greenhouse (to keep moisture in) with a hole at the top. The point of this item was to illustrate (part of)  the life-cycle or cacti, how they can remain dormant, survive and reporduce under the harsh dessert conditions. Specifically that once the seeds are disbursed (however that occurs) they can remain dormant and viable until rain occurs and then thry spout, and the cycle begins all over again.

Well, being that I have a window with southern exposure and it gets good light, I thought this would be as good a time as any to start it growing (if it would grow, that is). Mother nature does not dissappoint and the seeds are sprouting! I am considering getting a (inexpensive) digital camera so I can take pictures so you can see. I will have to plant it eventually...
