Part 1: Statement of Intent
I am going
to portray Brutus in my interview. Brutus is a conspirator along with many
others such as Cassius, Casca, and others. Brutus is a very nice person even
though he is a main conspirator. Brutus is honorable, if not too honorable.
Brutus is also trusting, fair, caring, gullible, and perversely logical. Brutus
is definitely an optimist because he looks for the good in people. Brutus also
does what he thinks is right. He bases decisions for the good of the people and
the country. Brutus has a moral imagination and because he killed Julius
Caesar, he has a guilty conscience. Brutus bases his decisions on perverted
logic. In the play Caesar is offered the crown thrice times, yet he refuses it
thrice times. This shows that Caesar is not hungry for power. It shows that he
is not the most ambitious person, yet Brutus is scared and frightened of what
he might do to the state. Brutus is afraid that Caesar, who has refused to become
king three times, will become power hungry and want to rule the state by
himself, leaving himself with all the power. Brutus wants his state to stay the
same as it is. Because he is afraid of what Caesar might do, he kills him, but
Brutus is honorable and trusting. When the conspiracy is being made, the idea
of the members of the conspiracy signing that they will stay true to the
conspiracy comes up. It is Brutus who says this is not necessary because every
man should have pride and should be able to be trusted to stay true to the
conspiracy without signing something. Among the conspiracy, the idea of killing
Antony as well
as Caesar also comes up. It is once again Brutus who says what he thinks. He
says it is not necessary to kill Antony because
without Caesar, Antony
is nothing. All these things that Brutus does shows that he is not afraid and
trusts those who do not have power or are less than Brutus, but someone who is
above Brutus, has more power than him, or has the ability to change the state
that Brutus lives in does not receive Brutus’s trust. It shows that Brutus is
afraid of the people who are better than him. At the end of the novel Brutus is
at the top and he has power because he is the leader of the war. While he is at
the top and has power he realizes that it is better that he kills himself
instead of killing someone else. It is also ironic that just like when Caesar
was killed by Brutus, Brutus is very powerful when he kills himself. This shows
that Brutus is also afraid of himself and what he is capable of doing and might
do to hurt his state or people of the state.
I plan to
portray Brutus as someone who is nice and caring. I also plan to make him sound
confused, as he is about life. I plan to show how he does what is good for the
state and how he cares so much about it.
Part 2: Audio Project
Interview
Script:
- Interviewer-
Hello Brutus, I have some questions for you.
- Interviewer-
Why do you have so much pride?
- Brutus-
I have a lot of pride because I care about myself and the state. I want
the state to be prosperous and live well. I also respect myself for who I
am because I am nice and I care for other people. I try to make good
decisions
- Interviewer-
Why are you such a trusting man?
- Brutus-
I am such a trusting man because of who I am and how I act. I like to
think that other people can be trusted. If people want something done so
bad then they will stay true to their word and not disobey. When we were
making the conspiracy I did not feel the need to sign or trust because I
knew that everyone wanted Caesar dead. Because of this I knew that
everyone could be trusted and they would stay true to their word.
- Interviewer-
Why do you act they way you do?
- Brutus-
I act the way I do because I have pride, honor, and trust. I also want
what is best for the people and the state so I base my decisions on that
as well.
- Interviewer-
Why did you feel the need to kill Caesar, but not Antony, and why did you kill Caesar.
- Brutus-
I felt that I needed to kill Caesar because I thought that he was the only
one that would do any harm to the state. Antony
had offered Caesar the crown so I knew that Antony was not going to be any trouble. Antony is nothing
without Caesar. I wanted to kill Caesar because I thought that if he got
too much power he might want to have all the power and not let anyone else
have any say in the state. I did not want this to happen because it would
tear the state apart and maybe cause it to destruct. I only did it for the
good of the state.
- Interviewer-
Thank you Brutus for your time.
- Brutus-
You are welcome.
Part 3: Evaluation
I thought
that the interview went really well. I portrayed Brutus just how I wanted to. I
made him confused and sound like he has perverted logic. I also made him show a
lot of pride for his country and how much he cares about his country. My
understanding of Brutus has greatly changed throughout this project. I really
broke Brutus’s decisions into pieces and understood why he did them or possible
reasons why he did them. Brutus is really a nice but odd character.
