Unresolved Problems Study Guide

Mr. Haskell World History

I. N. Ireland

History- There have been many invasions and wars throughout the history of Northern Ireland. The Celtics settled in Northern Ireland around 400 B.C.

Current political state (i.e., N. part of UK) - Today 2/3 of the people in Northern Ireland are Protestant and the other 1/3 are Catholic. The Protestants have the best land and the Catholic people want to kick the Protestant’s out of Ireland.

Extremism (i.e., IRA) - The extremists try to win with violence. The IRA bomb and kill innocent British people to prove a point and try to get them to leave.

Reunification (who wants it? who doesn't? means what?)- Reunification is to bring something or people back together. The Irish want reunification because they want there country back, but the British do not want the Irish to have their country back because that would mean they would have to leave.

III. Pacific Rim/ Trade

History (i.e., Kennedy 1961) - In the 20th century the United States dominated trade. In 1961 John F. Kennedy gave billions of dollars to help aid Japan.

Trade balance (in favor of who?)- The trade balance is in favor of Japan. It is in favor of Japan because they export way more than they import which is the complete opposite of the U.S.

IV. National Debt

National debt vs. deficit- The national debt is the actual money that we have not paid back. The deficit is the interest on the national debt. They are both horrendous amounts of money.

Magnitude of national debt (possible analogies) - The size of the national debt is like the size of the sun compared to Pluto. If a dollar bills were laid out all around the world for how much debt we have you would have to drive around the world for thousands of years and when you thought you were done more debt would be added and so would more miles.

Effect on future- National debt will affect the future because tax and interest rates will go up. Also items will be more expensive.

VII. AIDS

Basic facts from hand-out- The origin is believed to be in Africa. Aids starts out as HIV. When it is HIV it cannot kill you but it kills you when it turns into aids.

Treatment & research- There is medicine that can prolong your life if you have HIV, but there is nothing to kill the virus. Researchers are trying to make a medicine to prevent and kill aids and that is believed to be less than 10 years away.

History- The origin is believed to be in Africa. The first case of aids was in 1976. In 1985 the aids virus came into the mainstream. Someone is infected by HIV every 14 minutes.

Causes & prevention- Aids is cause by unprotected sex and by injection of IV drugs. It can be prevented by using a condom and not using used needles.
