Day one of our long weekend in Cancun was spent mostly in the airport wondering what happened to everybody else. I arrived about 1:30pm, 2 hours earlier than scheduled as I was able to fly standby on an earlier flight. I thought that would be a nice surprise. I knew Shane was expected before 2pm, but I didn't know what time April was supposed to arrive. Not long after my arrival, the monitors with the arrival and departure information locked up. So I waited. And waited. And waited. When the monitors came back, it was just after 3pm, and I had only seen two more flights arrive. As my original flight arrived, I determined that Shane's and April's flight either had not arrived, or had arrived without either of them. I went to the information desk, and was told that yes, their flight did arrive. Not knowing what else to do, as Shane was at least 2 hours overdue, I headed over to the hotel via airport shuttle.
After I checked in, I made my way to the concierge for assistance. We were able to call American
Airlines, and they told me yes, Shane was on the flight, and yes he did arrive as scheduled. As a matter of fact, his flight
arrived a little early. So I asked, there is only three baggage claims where I arrived? Yes. Okay. So hoping they remembered
in which hotel we were staying, I went back up to the room, opened the balcony doors, and took a nap while listening to the
ocean spray over the rocks. Finally, about 6 pm, my room phone rings, and guess who it is? They were downstairs in the lobby
and on their way up.
No sooner did they come in, and I get a hello as both of them blow right by me straight to the
balcony with their cameras. Shane had a borrowed video cam, which did not leave the room again until our trip back to the
airport on Monday.
Comparing notes, we had arrived in two separate terminals. I had flown in nationally from Mexico City. Shane and April flew in from Dallas and Atlanta respectively, so they flew international. Shane finally found someone who spoke English, and apparently he asked the right questions. So he had assistance using the local phone and calling to figure out which Hyatt I was at (there are two), and they got there lickety split.
We walked to the Hard Rock Cafe for dinner and returned to the hotel for some much needed sleep. I
had just returned from Taiwan the day before, worked all day, got sick, then spent most of the night getting ready. Shane was
up all night as he had to drive to SLC for a 6 am departure.
Saturday started off with breakfast, arranging activities and then a few hours of lounging in the
sun on the dock. Shane left to do some "perusing" while April and I spent more time lounging and swimming (body surfing).
After lunch by the pool, we set out to join the waverunner jungle cruise 30 minutes before the
meeting time, and one full hour before departure. Unfortunately, we got on the wrong bus, went the wrong way, and arrived at
the meeting point 20 minutes late. Hindsight being 20/20, we should have brought the video cam so at least we could have
record of our impromptu island excursion. Needless to say, we got back to the hotel, and while I was re-arranging our already
-paid-for activities...
Shane and April beat each other up...
and then took a nap.
