San Francisco, January, 1999

April had never been to California before, so we figured this would be a good time to go. We left January 1st, a very good day to travel since most everyone else is home nursing New Year's Eve joy. Driving straight through to the hotel, I was pretty much out as soon as my head hit the pillow. The next two days were spent at Fisherman's Wharf shopping and hanging out with the sea lions, and at the Palace of Fine Arts.

We also meet Cousin Jane, who Phyllis talks about all the time. She took us to dinner at a really nice italian restaurant, and even got a parking space right out front. In the city! She also drove us around and showed us the lights on the streets of San Francisco. Our whole evening, of course, revolved around when the 49ers' playoff game was. They won, and New England lost. :( *sigh*

April had just turned 21 in December, and I was going to surprise her with a bottle of vodka (her current drink of choice) for Christmas. However, I made the mistake of telling Shane, who was so upset that April was getting "booze" that he spilled the surprise. He says it wasn't on purpose... So, I decided not to get her the bottle for Christmas, and that was that; and it also made Shane very happy. Instead, I brought the bottle over in my suitcase and hid it for over a week (we were sharing a room) until New Year's Eve.

And what did Shane get April for Christmas that year? Idaho wine. And that was okay? Yes, because it's not "booze". You figure it out.

This is the morning of the first day, and we walked to Fisherman's Wharf, which was just under two miles from the hotel. We walked up and down and all around. Shopped a little, went to Ghirardelli Square, saw the sea lions. Basically enjoyed the nice weather. We actually walked everywhere because I didn't want to drive any more. Meanwhile, we had left the inside light on to my Blazer and killed the battery, and it never did drive right on the way home. However, with all that walking, by the afternoon...

Somebody needed a nap.

A small rest while Walking UUUUUUUPPPPPPP the hill back to the hotel.

Japantown, just a coupleof blocks from our hotel, at night.

The sunset over Lake Tahoe, enroute back to Idaho.
