Ramblings from the Past Commissioner... Towards the end of last season it was apparent that we have almost achieved parity. The Pride earned their title, but struggled with the Mud Sox and then the Brahmas to win it. The Senators (formerly Monarchs, I always wondered why they wanted to be named after a butterfly...) Added some pitching and came on strong late. The Grays were a much better team then their 4.5 wins showed as they pounded the Brahmas and Mud Sox in their double header finale. The Brahmas showed some signs of inconsistency down the stretch, but are always a tough team. The Mud Sox can be as good as any team. The Stingers (formerly known as the Lumber Kings) were a surprise disappointment this season. They signed good talent late in the season which should have bolstered their play-off chances, but didn't. However, if they can keep everyone, and add a #1 draft pick, they should be right there. For whatever reason, keeping their #1 draft picks has been a downfall of the Stingers and I can't figure out why. They are a fun group of guys who love to play ball. Perhaps they will have to give their potential draft picks a personality trait test to determine their compatibility... If you are a true baseball fan, you must consider attending these two events in your lifetime. 1. Spring Training. Granted now it's much different then when I started attending 15 years ago, but once you realize that the parks are so small there are no bad seats, even with the crowds it's fun. The complexes with multiple fields are the best to arrive early. About 3 hours before game time. You will be able to stand 8 feet from Jarrod Washburn as he works on his breaking ball. A few years ago we watched Harold Reynold work on DPs for an hour, that guy was an artist. Then look for batting practices. You will be able to snag HR balls like crazy. It's the true baseball fans fishing. You stand around talking in groups and hope you land the big one. I average one or two a day. Start the day with a big breakfast then snack at the ball parks then go someplace fun for dinner. 2. College World Series. Let me start with Beach Balls. True baseball fans hate them. In Omaha they pop out between innings, but as soon as play begins people say the "Games on!" and the balls are put away! The people who attend applaud good baseball first, before team loyalties. Bring your little leaguer - they'll show them how the game is supposed to be played. I've got to see Troy Glaus, Lance Berkman, Mark Prior, JD Drew (sat next to his mom) Sth Etherton and dozens of other who have made Major League rosters. Just go, you'll thank me later. The second weekend in June. Bring your clubs. |
