Your traditional "good guy", the hero has a strong sense of morals and strict honor code. He or she can often be seen in the lead and is rarely satisfied with any other position in a group. Recognition, perhaps even worship, is highly valued by heroes and they can sometimes be pompous or self-righteous. Ruthless and circumspect, the villain is a phenomenon that rarely occurs outside of fiction. He or she will usually have some dark purpose, though it would be unlikely for him or her to personally see it as such. All the same, villains are usually cunning masters of the lie and sometimes not seen for what they truly are. As a player, it is important to remember that your villain will not be loved and others will probably want to kill it. More harmless than a true villain, the trouble maker still does not have good intentions. He or she is rarely circumspect or devious at all, but can still be quite cruel when given the chance. Trouble makers can often be found as criminals, brawlers or the underlings of some villain. Studious and wise, the scholar is a master of the obscure and, oftentimes, arcane. Sometimes he or she has lost some touch with reality and is rarely practiced in arts of warfare. You can often find scholars as teachers or historians, or mages in such places as magic is not evil. Masters of word and song, the bard is a true "people person." Often possessing a silver-tongue, he or she is unlikely to be in a position of direct power, but even less likely to not have the ear of whoever is. Morals are not known to be the strong points of the bard, though keeping up appearances and keeping people in good spiritsare of high importance to him or her. A truly self-serving individual, the opportunist is rarely seen for what he or she is. Opportunists are usually clever and sneaky, though not opposed to doing good when it is convenient. Nevertheless, morals take second place to the opportunist's personal benefit. He or she is rarely loyal or devoted to any outside cause, such as religion, though will often claim to be. Despite being something we have all been before, the child is still one of the hardest character types to roleplay well. Children are usually more superficial than adults and have less control over their emotions. They will not understand a lot of what adults will and are unlikely to have any real skill at anything useful, especially combat. It is important, to remember that children have no money, power or influence of their own and are dependent upon others. Rich and often haughty, the socialite is more likely to be found at a tea party or some noble's court than along with an adventuring party. Gossip and fashion are of high import to socialites and they rarely have any useful skills to speak of, besides, perhaps, language and politics. Though often not at the forefront of the action, the helper is nonetheless an important part of every group. The welfare of others is one of his or her primary concerns, but other than that, the helper can vary greatly. You can often find helpers as clerics or healers. Though often less concerned with righteousness than is the hero, the leader usually has the best intentions of whoever he or she leads in mind. Leaders can sometimes be brusque and aloof, but frequently command a great deal of respect and are very loyal to whatever their cause is. Often not entirely sane, the eccentric can be a very interesting character to play. He or she will usually have some traits or behaviors which make no sense at all. Eccentrics can range from completely mad to a harmless old fool. When roleplaying, keep in mind that you don't over do it, or your eccentric can quickly become annoying. Hard-working and devoted, the worker will usually have worked out a spot for him or her self where he or she doesn't bother anyone else. Workers often have something that they are quite skilled at and fit in best where their skill can be put to good use. Independent and often aloof, the ranger can usually be found alone or in small groups. Rangers make good scouts, hunters and explorers and they can be very resourceful. However, they do not do well when others depend on them or they must depend on others. Fierce and courageous, the warrior is best known for killing things. He or she is rarely very personable and can have a short temper. Exactly how good or bad a warrior's intention are, or how loyal he or she is to his or her cause can vary greatly. |
