To all those who feel recent initiatives to streamline surveillance by the Executive Branch are overreaching, we offer one reminder:  September 11th.

On this day, the world changed, and for many days thereafter we lived our lives numb and in shock, incredulous at two things:  man's inhumanity to man as evinced by the terrorists, and secondly, the failure of our intelligence services to have foreseen and forestalled an act which obviously took much time and effort to plan and commit.

This man, our Attorney General, has two ponderous responsibilities--the protection of both our lives and our freedoms.  He must weigh one against the other, with an eye ultimately to our survival as a great nation wherein dwell happily the most creative, free, and carefree people in the world.  Thus we stand as a light of democracy, with individual rights always dependent upon the strength of the UNITED people.

It's an historic moment, and we pray for his continued wisdom and bravery.
