Legal Issues
All 50 states consider homeschooling legal.  However, specific laws governing homeschooling differ from state to state.  Whereas some states may only require a log of school attendance and a portfolio, other states stipulate college degrees for the teaching parent or notarized affidavit to the local school district.   Those interested in homeschooling should contact their state board of education and homeschool association for more information.  Families can also purchase insurance from the Homeschool Legal Defense Association (HSLDA) to seek legal counsel and protection from any litigation.  It also provides up-to-date information and legislation nationally with matters regarding homeschooling.

Homeschooling is allowed at overseas military installations.  Please check your base’s instruction for proper notification.  It is best to contact your base family service center, school or legal office.  As for CFAY, Instruction 1780.8A explains dependent children school attendance.  Please familiarize yourself with this instruction and inform your commanding officer about your intention to homeschool.   If your child is not enrolled in
IDEA or an established homeschool program, it is best to consult the state (which you will be returning or transferring to) board of education for educational requirements.
