Homeschooling on your own can be a phenomenal task without good support. All states have a private homeschool support association. These support associations provide the latest information and resources on homeschooling and legal issues unique to the respective state. Many sponsor homeschool conventions and seminars. They also maintain a list of local homeschool support groups.
It is highly advisable to join a local homeschool support group. Each support group has a monthly meeting to discuss topic, problems and homeschool issues. There may be a playgroup or learning co-ops associated with that group. Support groups offer various opportunities for children to meet other children who are also being homeschooled.
Co-ops enable students to participate as a group in a learning project. Parents may pool their talent together by teaching a class of their choice. For example, one parent may desire to teach a cooking class for a month, while another parent will teach a language. Co-ops and small group sessions become important in the upper grades. Classes such as laboratory sciences and team or group oriented become more prevalent in the higher grades. Sometimes a private teacher will be hired and a school science lab rented in order for homeschooled students to facilitate learning.
The local homeschool support group in the Yokosuka area is the Kanto Plains Home Schoolers (KPHS). This group offers support meetings, field trips, and co-ops. Members are not required to participate. KPHS provides activities for homeschoolers to interact with homeschoolers. Information and resources unique to the military family is available as well.
