TESTING

Although standardized testing is not required at Yokosuka base, it is highly recommended that all homeschooled children be tested.  Standardized testing 1) shows how students compare with other students of the same grade; 2) identifies strengths and weaknesses of the student; 3) gives teacher guidance on instruction – where more or less attention needs to be given.

Standardized testing is one way of evaluating a student’s progress.  Although you may create your own tests or maintain some type of portfolio assessment, the advantage of standardized tests is that they are recognized as official records.  They serve as your personal official progress report that you can submit to transferring schools, school districts and other educational institutions if needed.

When to administer the test depends upon what test you are giving.  Some are only available for certain grades.  Testing can be done in the fall, winter or spring.

There are also proctoring requirements.  The person administering the test must minimally have a bachelor’s degree.  Some tests require teacher certification as well as training qualifications for that particular test.  You should become familiar with the requirements before ordering your tests.  Also, be aware of the time limits.  Allow adequate time for ordering and processing.  Tests must be returned within a specified time of receiving test materials.  Check with the testing service for specific dates and times.

Please note that CAT5 is available to homeschoolers enrolled in the IDEA program.  The DoDD schools offer Terra Nova testing.  Contact the appropriate DoDD school for registration and testing information.
