Fly Fishing in South Africa
Fly fishing is a growing sport in South Africa. Hundreds of Lodges are found scattered around the country.

I visited a few of them and will list them with comments.
Elandskloof Trout Farm
Elandskloof Trout Farm is situated near Dullstroom, Mpumalanga. It is one of the oldest trout farms in the area and it offers the visitor a variety of accomodation.

For the campers there are campsites with power either shaded or not. Luxury chalets sleeping six people and farm houses , some without power offers privacy for large groups. Rondawels with shared ablutions are also available.

This is a working farm and horse rides and quadbike rides can also be arranged.

Although I didn't have much luck fishing in the 11 dams, others caught some good sized trout.

Waterfall Trout Lodge
Waterfall Trout Lodge is situated 20 kilometers from Carolina in Mpumalanga. At first when you turn off the main tar road, doubts will enter your mind about the advisability of staying there. Ignore them - you will be treated to an experience which will stay with you for the rest of your life.

The hosts, Lindy and Charles are two of the most hospitable people I have ever met.  They welcome you onto their property as part of their growing family. Every need is catered for and nothing is too much trouble.

My son wanted to go horseriding and they promptly set about arranging with a neibouring farm to accomodate him.

The accommodation? Splendid. We stayed in the double story thatch lodge which can accommodate an enormous group of people. The atmosphere inside reminds of a country lodge in the highlands of Scotland.

The lodge overlooks a dam, which is well stocked (I cought my first trout about half an hour after arriving).
It has a private fire place set under a huge tree with a large outdoor table and chairs for comfort.

Privacy is guaranteed as the fishermans's cottage is on the other side of the dam.  This cottage sleeps 4 comfortably and also offers privacy to its guests.

Walking towards the mountains, you'll find the dam depicted in the picture on the right. I have to mention, that I have only seen scenery like this on television. It is our own Canada in Mpumalanga.

Are they worth a visit? Most definitely. Whether you just want to relax and enjoy the scenery or do some serious fly fishing, this is the place to go.
