In March of 2001 40 Students from NYU, Columbia, Barnard, and the University of Pennsylvania spent a week living in Ciudad Romero, a village in the Usulutan region of El Salvador. We journeyed to El Salvador as part of an Alternative Spring Break organized by the American Jewish World Service.* During the week, we helped build and rebuild homes that were destroyed in the devastating earthquakes that took place in January and February of that year. In the process, we found that we, too, were being rebuilt. The images you see here call attention to these young lives, touched by tragedy and destruction, yet persevering with laughter and joy. This exhibit carries with it the message of tikkun olam, fixing the world. When we work to enrich the life of one, we enrich an entire universe of hope and possibility. We are grateful to the children who have touched and enriched our own lives. We hope to bring their love and hope into our own individual and communal paths of tikkun olam. |
