Hi, this is Melvin, hailing from Singapore. This website is created primarily
to share catch reports from my angling trips. Angling was once a distant
childhood memory for me. Back at the tender age of 6 years, I was introduced to
angling using just a handline and cockles as bait on my Aunt's kelong. I
never did really took up the hobby then, until ankle surgery put an end to
mainstream sports like soccer during college days. It was only then that I took up angling as a
serious hobby and I've never looked back since.
I would like to put in a word of appreciation here, to Edmund (Hai Loi), who introduced me to surf fishing back in 1999. Having taken up this form of fishing, I'm glad that I did. Surf Fishing allows one to fish areas usually not possible with short rods. Also, when the unknown one goes on a long run, the feeling is one of thrill and excitement. Using this two words to describe the feeling is already mild, IMHO. One can only understand the adrenalin rush when he hooks up onto a big one on surf! Hopefully, the pictures in the photo galleries and trip reports will churn out more anglers taking up this form of fishing.
Recently, there has been a lot of people taking up angling as a hobby. I hope to share my limited experience with others. Hopefully, they will find my write-ups useful. Some of the write-ups include the essential stuff to start out on surf fishing, identifying the different types of baits and fishes that one encounters more commonly in Singapore and some on rigs that I use, among other stuff. Looking back at 2004, this was a year where lots of quality table fish was landed, with the most memorable being the landing of 2 Threadfins in one night.
Even so, it was heart breaking to hear of Tsunamis wrecking havoc on the coastal areas of Phuket in Thailand and Sri Lanka to name but a few. Click here to find out how one can help. To KL TEO: I always fish at Bedok Jetty, Labrador Park and West Coast Beach. These are common spots but the difference that a trip makes lies in the bait. Fresh squid is always preferred over other baits like Tamban in night fishing. Try it out and you'll see the results. Cheers.
To Nigel: I seldom fish on Kelongs. Maybe you could raise a question at Fishing Kaki Forum.
To Junyuan: It's quite hard to predict a chart for fish seasons in Singapore. However, on a personal belief, I feel that one will encounter Threadfin Salmon more frequently in June-August, Barramundi in May-July & December. That is for shore fishing.
To Huat: Live prawns are universal bait for good tablefare like Fingermark Snappers, Barramundi which is also commonly known as Seabass locally and Threadfin Salmon, among other fishes. Bigger baits like whole baitfishes like Tamban, Kembong, Sand Whiting & Selars can get you stingrays, but then again, Stingrays are not really fussy about what they eat. To me, fishing is more of 90% luck and 10% skill. Its more of the waiting, the right company and the appreciation of the nice serene & scenic surroundings.
