'The mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation'. This is the quote we will be tested on tomorrow. Mrs.Jeong gave us this hint to help us prepare for our critical reading test. It seems that Mr.Han, who is giving us the test, said that this was a very beautiful and important quote. Actually, I can see that it is important enough to appear on the back cover in bold letters.
I cannot understand this line fully, but somewhere deep in my heart I can feel sympathy towards it. The life I live is indeed a life of desperation. The passage that goes on after the quote follows that 'A stereotyped but unconscious despair is concealed even under what are called the games and amusements of mankind. There is no play in them, for this comes after work.' Isn't this quote true for us all? Students in KMLA are so disturbed by their studies, they do not have time to truly enjoy play. There is an old nursery rhyme that says 'All play and no work make Jack a dull boy...' I think that a dull life can be considered as a life of desperation. What is the use of living if there is no color in life? To quote another line from Walden - 'To be awake is to be alive.' We should be awake! We should awaken from the dull stupor we live in!
