We all have unglazed pots that have white mineral deposits on them that build up over time. It is no good to just wash the pot because as soon has it is dry again the stains will reappear. The sequence bellow is a very quick and easy way of cleaning any unglazed pot. |
The pot is scrubbed with a toothbrush in a mix of warm water with a few drops of detergent or dishwashing liquid, a few drops of vinegar in the water will also help to dissolve any build up of lime scale. |
When the pot is dry it needs a light coat of oil. Traditionally Camellia oil is used, Camellia oil is pressed from the seeds in the camellia family, traditionally used by Samurai for preventing corrosion in swords. It's becoming widely available from Bonsai centres or woodworking suppliers for use in oiling chisels. |
This pot was oiled with Leaf Shine, normally used to clean & shine house plant foliage, was used on this pot. It is very easily available & works very well. It is sprayed directly onto the pot or applied to a lint free cloth & rubbed into the surface. The pot is left clean without any deposits & will stay looking this way for a few months. |
The weeds and moss along with some of the old surface dressing. Fresh moss is placed over the tying in wires & temporarily covers a root on the right hand side that was untangled & wired down last repoting. A fresh surface dressing of fine sieved akadama & kanuma is applied. The Tree is now ready for it's photo taking for the last picture on the Work in progress Page. |
