- Opportunities to serve at Berea on summer staff
- Counselor-Training Program
- The CT program is an
advanced education training course designed to equip the
Waterfront, Sports, Archery, Riglery, and Crafts staff for
counseling during the summer. This program is a requirement
for those who have been hired in these areas.
- Facilities Department
- Three areas of work assignment
make up the facilities department: outdoor care, building
cleaning and maintenance, and dining hall duties, People
working facilities rotate assignments and shifts on a weekly
basis. Mowing lawns, repairing buildings, cleaning guest
rooms, running the snack bar, and serving meals are all under
the facilities umbrella.
- Kitchen Department
- Cooks/Baker: One head cook is needed in addition to
several staff who assist the cook and do the baking.
- Kitchen Staff: These workers help prepare and serve
food, as well as cleaning the diskes and pots.
- Nursing Department
- Two R.N. positions are available.An L.P.N. may
also apply.
- Office Staff
- A summer assistant is needed for Berea's
full-time secretary. Typing skills are required. Computer and
phone experience are helpful, but not required.
- Program Staff Department

- Recreation Department
- Archery
- The position of Archery Director needs a person
with a background in range safety, equipment selection and
instruction. Training witht the NAA or CTSAIS can be arranged
for an applicant with proper background and interest.
- Crafts
- A person with experience in arts and crafts is
required to head this department. An assistant position is
also available.
- Riflery
- The position of Rifle Range Director calls for
one who has experience with firearms and holds a current NRA
instructor rating. Training for certification can be arranged
for an applicant with proper background and interest.
- Sports/Challenge Course Staff
- High energy people who
can lead games and orgainze sporting events are needed for
this department. The ability to teach various sporting skills
and to assist counselors in providing meaningful recreational
experiences for the campers is essential.
- Staff-In-Training
- The SIT program provides an
opportunity for teens who are 15 years or older to have a
short-term staff experience. Over a 4-5 week period (including
Staff Week), a variety of job assignments will expose the teen
to the different areas of summer-long work available. SITs
will be trained as Facilities workers, and they will recieve
daily assignments through the Facilities supervisor. A
successful completion of the SIT program will enable the
participant to be highly considered for a position on the
summer staff next year. SIT participants are not paid, but
will receive a valuable asset...experience!
- Waterfront Department
- Persons with a current Lifeguard
Training Certificate may apply for position of Lifeguard.
Those also holding a current Water Saftey Instructor
certificate may apply for the position of Waterfront Director.
Information on training and certification is available upon
request.
- Volunteer Counselor
- Most of Berea's counselors are
volunteers for a week or two. Applicants must be at least one
year out of high school and may apply for any camp session.
- Leadership Development Campers
- The LDC program is a two
week course designed to give both classroom and practical
experience in the basics of camp counseling. Applicants for
Boys' or Girls' camps must have earned the Berea patch for
each year attended; 15 year olds with no Berea experience may
also apply at a higher fee rate. There will be at least a
three year age difference between the LDC and the cabin of
campers with which he/she is assisting.
- Junior Counselor
- Those who have successfully completed
the LDC program may apply for the JC level.
- General Information
- Although staff members are hired for specific departments,
all are expected to counsel or work in other departments if
the need arises.
- Summer Session
- Staff Week begins Father's Day; the
season ends Labor Day. Staff members are expected to work the
entire season. There is one full day off per calendar month worked.
