Acadia National Park, originally called Lafayette National Park until 1929 was the first National Park east of the Mississippi River. Most of the park is located on Mount Desert Island, but there are also sections of park on the Schoodic Peninsula and Isle au Haut. Acadia is the only National Park in New England. It draws the higest visitation per acre of all the National Parks. The Park consist of a mix of rish evergreens, coastal mountains, rocky coastlines, and the restless Atlantic Ocean. It is a place where the sea and the mountains meet. Visitors of the park can take the 20 mile Park Loop Road or take a trip up to the 1,530 foot Cadillac Mountain, the tallest point in Acadia National Park and the entire East Coast. Another highlight are the carriage roads built by John D. Rockefeller. They are closed to automobiles, and are a treasure for hikers, bikers, and horseback riders.
