While in Christchurch U.S. Antarctic Program workers are able to choose where they would like to stay. Over the years I've found this place, Charlie B's backpackers to be hospitable and comfortable. Just north of the town square makes it easy walking distance to downtown or bus transportation to other areas. A backpackers is similar to a hostel; common baths and rooms that are private or shared. Sometimes, flights to Antarctica are cancelled due to poor weather or mechanical repairs on the planes and a stay of a few days is welcome. Being it is springtime in New Zealand, I can wander around town and take in the sites of the beautiful botanical gardens, head to the beach, or make day trips to cities nearby. Going from fall weather back in United States to this is quite pleasant.
I met up with Shane O'Driscoll, a Christchurch native, at Bailey's Pub. We met earlier in the year while I was traveling in Ireland. It was good to see him again. Bailey's is the place where many Antarctic bound workers congregate during their stays in Christchurch.
The Christchurch trolley takes visitors to many venues throughout the downtown area.

I finally pursued some kayaking on the Avon River this trip. JP McMullen, another longtime seasonal worker in Antarctica, and I take in a beautiful springtime day. Paddling by the botanical gardens is a bonus. JP is in the right photo, myself in the left.
