ENVIRONMENTAL CONCERNS AND OBSERVATIONS BY MOUNTAINEERS

Some disturbing observations needing some suggestions on what can be done:

1. Mangrove in the Cavite coastal road is being cut to make way for the express way.  This I gathered is with the sanction of DENR.  Relayed week of 1 June.

2. Garbage in Mt. Makiling peak Los Banos side is multiplying.  There is  sign that instructs climbers to dump their garbage from the trek in a foxthole near the mudspring.  Concern climbers bring their garbage all the way down to the urban center. Observed 31 May.

3. Logs are brought down at an alarming rate in Mt. Talamitan, Mindoro. There are regular fires near the peak which is deliberately set on fire apparently by the resident late in the evening.  Seen April 1998.

4. Hundreds of big trees are down in Bataan Peak, a DENR protected area and a national park.  It is the mountain range across Mt.Natib.  Either the big trees are sick or deliberately weakened.  Observed 10 May.

5. Mt. Malipunyo, from Tiaong side is a totally bald mountain.  Seen 16 May.

6. Picos de Loros is threatened with the proposed road that cuts through Nasugbu and Ternate.  DENR has a pivotal role in the decision.

7. Forest Fires in Batulao, Pulag, Apo, Kanlaon, Palawan etc.  Is there now a news black out on these?

Ideas from NGOs, 1st world climbers, working climbers, clubs, anyone on what organized activities can be done are certainly most welcome.
