Safety and Experience Survey of Recreational Scuba Divers

Scuba diving was one of my childhood passions. Like many other divers, I became interested in the underwater world by watching the TV series Sea Hunt starring Lloyd Bridges as Mike Nelson. Every night, I sat watching intensely as Mike would descend to fight off a man-eating creature or an evil vilian that had just knifed one of his hoses in half on his dual-hose regulator (funny, always was the exhaust side). I would always pretend to be diving or reading books on diving. I grew up loving the sea. As a kid, my family would camp on the ocean on Cape Ann in Gloucester. We would always pack a lunch and take trips to Good Harbor beach.

My interest in diving would remain dormant until, in 1994, my wife and I went to Aruba. Snorkeling was included as part of a jeep safari tour. I remember sitting on the dock putting on my fins and mask, wondering what, if anything, I would see. As soon as my mask broke the surface, I was amazed. Literally, a world of multicolored fish, plants, and coral. I was the perverbial "kid in a candy store".

After that, I promised myself that the next time I put on a mask and snorkel there would be a tank strapped to my back. Then, on May 31, 1998, I became a certified PADI open water diver. On July 9, 2000, I completed my Advanced Open Water training. My "specialties" were Underwater Naturalist and Search & Recovery. However, I indirectly qualify for Wreck and Boat Dive specialties because I did my Navigation requirement at the wreck of the Chelsea which required a boat to get us there ;).

Scuba diving has given me the opportunity to meet many wonderful people and see things that I never would have seen otherwise. It gave me a real appreciation for the life that is there; that is not all man-eating vicious monsters but critters that are just as curious of you as you are of them. So turn off your TV and tune in to the real world; the world beneath the sea!

My local diving haunt is Cape Ann but I have also enjoyed diving in the Caribbean off the Yucatan coast. Please enjoy my photos of the underwater world!
