"Scoutcraft Project: Wooden
Woggles"
We made these a couple of years ago, and many of the youth still
have theirs. Most likely under a pile in their rooms...
This Scoutcraft project should take 1-2 nights to complete. As far
as programme links: Scoutcraft Badge (older programme...which brings
me to the question: why was this badge dropped from the new
programme? Anyone from National want to field this one?); knife
safety; Artist Badge; etc.
Materials
pieces of pine/spruce/fir 6" long (1 1/2" square) (we used 2x4
studs, ripped in half)
pocket knife of carving knife
sandpaper (various grits)
access to a drill press or vise and hand drill
1" spade bit
paint or stain
brushes
glue/glue gun (perfect for a stick-up!)
Directions
1. shape one end of the piece of wood to desired shape (circular,
etc.)
2. sand it using gradually finer grit sandpaper
3. find centre and drill down to a depth of about 2" (this can be
done first)
4. using a hand saw, cut woggle at desired length
5. finish woggle by painting it (perhaps a patrol logo) or staining
it...make it as personal as possible
6. if painted, a clear coat of plastic spray can be used to protect
it
7. if it slips off from over the necker, a drop or two of hot glue
inside the woggle will fix that
