Sam's fishing log!

5/1/00 Headed for Silver lake again with two friends. We hit the water at about 8:00pm and fished until about 9:40. We each hooked around 10 fish on the afore mentioned flies but landed far less due to a forgotten hook sharpener!

4/29/00 Went up to Silver lake for opening day of fishing season. Hit the lake at about 8:30 and ran into the normal "combat" fishing conditions but that didn't stop me and my partner from hooking ten nice trout a peice. Of course on opening day almost everything works but what worked for us was a #12 Olive Woolly Bugger. Another good pattern is a Black leach with no hackle just a marabou tail in either size 10 or 12.

Well, It's been awhile but I'm finally able to work on my site again! I'm sorry I haven't updated so long but you all know how it is. Between work women and everything else it's hard to find the time to update. Now, on to the belated reports!

12/11/98 In the past four days I've been fishing the Nooksack for a few hours everyday in the late afternoon with pretty good success. I've been getting the best results with large (1/0 and 2/0) pink and red marabou flys. I've been able to catch 12 or more fish a day by fishing the edges of drifts above heavy rapids. Pools also seem to be producing well although I haven't been giving them much attention. If you're after some good Chum salmon action I'd suggest fishing near the Bridge over the North Fork at Welcome.

12/2/98 Alright, I know my reports have been spotty at best but I'm really doing my best to keep this log up to date but my life is really catching up with me! I've been fishing Whatcom Creek off and on for the past two weeks. The Chums are in really heavy in fact people have been saying they're too many fish in there. (Never thought you'd hear that?). I've been getting them to hit green corkies and flies with about equal results. The Nooksack (If it ever clears up) should produce some nice Chums. I've seen alot of fishing moving in the shallows with the high water.

10/10/98 A friend and I hit the Nooksack in late evening with flies. After about 20 minutes of walking and looking we spotted some nice King's moving up stream in the shallows. I hooked into a nice fish on my second cast and 10 jumps and 20 minutes later I landed a nice 17lb King which I released, my friend also snagged one in the tail (oops).

10/6/98 Fished the Nooksack between Deming and Nugets Corner for about 4 hours. Didn't hook anything fly fishing but saw alot of nice kings rolling. Water conditions are good with about 4 or 5 feet of visibilty. Talked to some other fisherman who said that fish are being taken on eggs in the lower river.

10/5/98 Have been fishing the Nooksack for the past two days in the afternoons. Haven't hooked into anything lately but today while fly fishing saw four nice sized Kings moving up river and also saw some King "reds" (salmon nests to those not up on fishing terms).

9/28/98 Fished the Nooksack from about 4pm untill around 6. Caught one nice chrome bright Coho hen on a #4 Vibrax spinner.

9/24/98 Fishing in Whatcom Creek seemed to be heating up awhile back for Kings but it never really hasn't gotten going yet. A few fish are being taken, mainly in the lower portion of the creek and most of them at low tide. I'll be fishing down there alot in the upcoming weeks and will be updating this page often.

9/24/98 I'm back and ready for another season!. Alright, I know I've been letting my site go for awhile now but I've started fishing again and I'm working on this site again! I'd just like to add that I'm sorry for not responding to any questions in the past few months but I've been far too busy.

4/26/98 Fished Silver Lake from about 5:30am till around 9am. Fishing wasn't as good this year as last opening day, too many boats and people not knowing what they were doing. I hooked and landed about 6 ten to twelve inch Rainbows on a Size 12 Dark Olive Wooly Bugger.

4/21/98 Well, It's been awhile since I've done any fishing but opening day is coming up and I've been getting ready for it! So, you can expect new reports within the next week!!

2/3/98 The steelhead action on the Nooksack is getting hot!!. Fished the same spot as yesterday and in about 15 minutes had a nice sharp grab, after a nice 3 minute fight I landed a nice 7 or 8 pound chrome bright native hen. Water visibility is slighty more than yesterday.

2/2/98 Fished the Nooksack above Nugent's Corner for about an hour. Hooked and lost one very nice steelhead which looked to be around 16+ pounds! Water conditions are very good with about 4 or 5 feet of visibility.

12/8/97 Fly fished the North fork of the Nooksack for about 3 hours. Hooked 3 and landed 2 old chums. The one I lost was of course, a nice bright chum! I was fishing small dark green flies. The water is REALLY clear and cold just perfect!

11/20/97 Fished Whatcom Creek for chums for about 2 hours. Hooked into three small 3 or 4 pound chums the smallest I've seen!!! But the creek does seem to have at least two more weeks of good fishing left in it!!

11/18/97 I've been doing a lot more fly tying than fishing in the past few weeks but I did manage to get out a few times for Cohos and Chums. The Coho run seems to be almost over which is a real shame but at least the chums have started to run in the river heavy!

10/27/97 The Nooksack has been fishing very well this past week. I have been able to hook at least two nice Cohos every trip out. They are mostly hitting green these days but on darker days they will hit sliver.

10/15/97 Well, the Nooksack is finaly fishable again after about two weeks of rain and high water. I fished my favorite salmon hole for about 2 hours. On my first cast I hooked into a fiesty 2 pound Coho which I quickly landed and released. after a few more minutes of casting my Bluefox Vibrax spinner I felt another hard strike, after a lovely series of jumps and leaps I landed a fine 6 pound hen which I also released. I also hooked a much larger fish which I lost.

10/12/97 I have been fishing Whatcom Creek alot in the past few weeks because the Nooksack is out of shape. The creek has been pretty good for Coho's and there are still a few nice King's. The main Chum run has not started yet although I have already hooked two (both snagged). Today I did what some say can only be done in Alaska, I hooked three different speicies of salmon in about two hours!! one Coho, one King and one Chum!!!

9/28/97 Fished Whatcom Creek for Kings for about 4 hours. Hooked 4, landed 2, nither of which were a legal hooked!! most of the fish being taken were foul hooked. There were alot of fish moving even with the seal chasing them. (if you've fished the Creek you'll know about the seal).

9/23/97 The river has been high but getting better and it finely got nice and green just in time for me to go fishing! The fishing now is mostly for Coho's (or Sliver's) and also Humpies, but that run doesn't seem to be happening in full force yet. I fished for about 2 hours. Saw about 7 fish jumping or splashing in shallow water, most of them seemed to be King's and Coho's. I was using size 4, red, Bluefox Vibrax spinners. I used a slow retreve which seemed to work best last year and sure enough on my fifth cast I felt a nice sharp tug, I set the hook hard into what turned out to be a chrome bright, three pound Coho! My first of the season!

9/3/97 Well, the Nooksack River opened for salmon on the first of the month, but the run of Pink's seems to be running late. I fished for about 3 hours and saw one fish jumping. It should get good once the water cools down again.

8/30/97 Fished Whatcom Creek for about 6 hours saw only a few fish moving. Had one on which was snagged in the tail. All in all a VERY slow day. Maybe fishing will pick up with the next rain.

8/28/97 Whatcom Creek is really starting to get hot. Fished for about 4 hours, hooked and landed 3 fish two were snagged but the other was a 20 pound hen hooked right in the mouth!!!!! there were about 300 fish moving trough the creek.

8/27/97 Fished Whatcom Creek for about two hours. Hooked and landed one King which was snagged in the tail. Fish are starting to show in good numbers now with the rain.

8/6/97 Well, Salmon season opened on the first of the month for Kings in Whatcom Creek. They should start to show up in good numbers with the first good rain. I hope in the weeks to come that I will be able to work on this page more and also fish more!

7/29/97 Fished Smith Creek for Rainbows. Caught 5 small fish on size 12 Hatch Masters.

7/23/97 Fished Bellingham Bay using Pink and Pearl Buzz Bomb's. Caught one Dog fish. Had to return to port after only about 15 minutes of fishing due to motor trouble.

7/2/97 Fished Canyon Creek for about half an hour using flies. The water was high but I still hooked three farely small trout, 2 Bull trout and one Cutt. The best flies for Canyon Creek are size 12 or smaller Renegades and size 10 or 12 peacock hurl nymphs.

6/13/97 Well I am getting a boat. But not the Reinell. I'm getting a 22' Bayliner which needs a lot less work so I should have some new fishing reports soon!

6/5/97 Fished Fazon for Bluegills using worms and flies. Caught about eight big bluegills they were all about eight inchs or bigger. Also the lake is getting really good for Bass. I lost what I think was about a two pounder, it was caught on a plastic worm.

5/18/97 Fished Fazon from 4:30 'til 7:00pm. Caught 17 bluegills on worms. Most of them were over 6 inchs! They seem to be moving in small schools which are easy to spot as they are feeding on the surface. They are however very spooky! but they calm down fast and start feeding again (Thank God!).

5/17/97 Fazon Lake is one of the best local lakes for bass, bluegill, perch and catfish. With the warm weather the lake has finely gotten warm enough to make the bluegills start striking! A friend and I fished from about 10:30 'til 12:30. I caught 17 bluegills and 1 perch on worms (The bait of choice for bluegills). All of them were small.

5/3/97 Fished Sliver from 6:40pm until about 9:12. caught two fish. One was a pretty nice rainbow and the other was a native cutthroat. It was about 13 inchs and put up one hell of a fight on a six weight fly rod! Both fish were caught on Black Wolly Buggers.

4/29/97 Fished Sliver Lake from 1:50pm 'til 7:00pm. Caught six Rainbows all on Black Wolly Buggers. One was about 15 inchs! (That's a good trout for Sliver Lake) There were about Five boats and one float tube on the lake.

4/27/97 Fished Silver Lake from 6:30pm to 8:40pm there were lots of trout rising but my friend and I only landed 1 Rainbow and 1 Steelhead (The Fish and Game Department planted 2.000 Steelhead over the winter along with 20.000 Coho Salmon). The two fish were caught on Black Wolly Buggers.

4/26/97 Well it's opening day of Trout season! I fished Sliver Lake from 5:15am 'til 12:40pm.There were about 200 boats on the lake! I landed 18 nice Rainbows and lost about four. Most of them were caught using Black or Olive Wolly Buggers in size 8 and 10 and the others were caught on size 2 Black and Yellow Panther Martins.

3/27/97 Although the season is closed I still walk the river. If the river stays like it is now (which I doubt) it should be good for salmon. They are about seven or eight very good salmon holes in the two mile stretch of the river that I fish the most.

11:11 AM 3/15/97 Well it's the last day of the season, so this is my last steelhead fishing report of the year. I fished for about one hour. It was snowing pretty hard but the river was in really good shape, about four foot visibility. I got one good strike.

1:30 PM 3/13/97 Fished for about about three hours. Had one nice strike. The river is still in very good shape.

2:30 PM 3/10/97 Fished for about two hours got one nice six pound native hen. I was using eggs and a small corkie. The river is still in good shape.

2:27 PM 3/09/97 Fished for about one hour. The wind was too strong to keep fishing. Got one nice strike. The river is in good shape with about two and a half foot visibility.

3:35 PM 2/23/97 A friend and I fished for about two hours. Water conditions were good with about three feet of visibility. We got one nice five pound native hen and got a few other strikes. The fish was caught using a size eight red cheater and red yarn.

4:34 PM 2/15/97 Fished for about half an hour. Water conditions were very bad with about six to twelve inchs of visibility.

4:24 PM 2/09/97 Fished with a friend for about two hours saw one nice steelhead taken. The water conditions were about the same. But the temperture was a bit colder.

3:30 PM 2/08/97 Caught a 31" native hen steelhead!!! It was caught using a red cheater and shrimp oil.Water conditions were clear, with about three feet of visibilty. Water temperture was about fourty nine degrees. It took me about twenty minutes to land it!
