April Chores

By: Gary R. Akin

April is here and I'm happy at last

I've got so many chores to do.

Camp is calling and I'm heading out

the next day the skies are blue.

I'll clear the trails and skid the logs

so they can be cut and split and stacked.

Its cold and wet and dirty work

Extra clothes and socks'll be packed.

But, I'm heading out 'cause there's work to be done,

I'll see Jake, if I have the time.

The coffee will be kept hot upon the stove,

In case he hears my chainsaw whine.

I'll need twenty-five or thirty logs

back at camp by the first of May.

Wally and Fred come up to hunt turkeys then,

they'll cut and split later in the day.

But, I always save time to walk the woods.

I check out last fall's sign.

The woods now look just like they will

only seven months down the line.

Getting this fall's wood back to camp right now

is a task I won't put on 'Hold'.

Its gotta be done so I'll get right on it,

Or in November we'll all be cold.

So I'm headin' out just as soon as I can

I'll see what weather is heading this way.

I can leave in a moment, I just have to call the boss,

And let him know that, "I'm sick today!".
