West Branch,
Ausable River
This is a great trout stream. My dad has been coming up here for over 30 years. Recently the fishing has been coming back after several down seasons. The state stocks it heavily with browns & rainbows.
The fly-fisherman have been doing well in the new no-kill section on Rt. 86 back towards Lake Placid.
Whiteface Mountain towers over this river, just west of Wilmington, NY. It is "The Olympic Mountain", and major renovations have recently been implemented, not the least of which was the installation of the fastest gondola in the United States, to quickly and warmly get the skiers back up the hill.
The Ausable empties into Lake Champlain which has been making its own comeback with improved fishing for salmon and lake trout now that the lamprey problem has been addressed. However the program needs to be renewed and the Vermont side of the lake has stopped lamprey treatment at the moment.
