The Rhode Island Red is one of the most famous dual purpose breeds. Developed in the early 1900's this breed is known for being an excellent layer of brown eggs. The Rhode Island Red is also considered a heavy breed.

The Barred Rock is a heavier breed. Their plumpness and yellow skin make them a great roasting fowl. They are also excellent layers of brown eggs.

This breed originated in Australia. They are a heavy breed but are known better for their egg laying ability. An australop hen holds the world record for laying 364 eggs in 365 days. Females mature early and will start laying between 5 and 6 months.
