Mesa Verde has hundreds of Anasazi Indian dwellings, built from the 6th to the 12th centuries. Some 3,800 sites have been recorded. Many are small family dwellings, but some are as large as Spruce Tree House, with as many as 200 rooms.
Mesa Verde was designated a National Park on June 29, 1906. Additional land was added to the Park on June 30, 1913; May 27,1932; and Dec. 23, 1963. Some of Mesa Verde recieved it's Wilderness area designation Oct. 20, 1976, and recieved World recognition by the U.N. as a World Heritage Site on Sept. 6, 1978.
Mesa Verde was a major metropolis around 1100 A.D. until 1300 A.D. The number of residents is estimated at 5000. The Anasazi of Mesa Verde were very successful potters, and made some of the most beautiful pottery to view, even today. They traded this pottery with other Anasazi Villages, such as Aztec (New Mexico) and Chaco Canyon. There is a multitude of evidence that the Anasazi had quite a trade route, because of Macaw Feathers, and Sea Shells that were found in the ruins. It is believed that they were used as jewelery. These feathers and shells are believed to have come from the Toltec's or the Inca's of Mexico.
