I spent the entire summer of 1998 scouting, photographing, and learning the habits of mt. goats. I encountered over 300 different goats to some of the most beautiful, alpine country on our continent. This is the story about my successful hunt with a few goat facts I picked up along the way.
I was fortunate to draw both Colorado bighorn sheep and mt. goat tags in 1998. When I wasn't scouting the goat craigs I was huffing up the 12,000 to 14,000 foot sheep peaks. Needless to say I was in incredible shape for the upcoming season. This is the story about my great sheep hunt in the Colorado Rockies.
I had a fairly slow year in 1997 so decided to do something exotic. What better way to rid myself of the winter "blues" than to trade a hunt with Tom Prihoda in the beautiful Texas Hillcountry. This country is teaming with a wide array of critters. I literally had a blast. This is the story about my first "exotic" experience in the outdoors.
Southeast Alaska is a magical place teaming with marine and land animals. I exchanged a hunting/fishing combination with a couple fellow outdoorsman from Wrangell, Alaska and had the time of my life. I saw everything from black bear to whales. We also had a close encounter with Mother Nature that put a giant twist on the trip.
There is nothing quite like salmon flyfishing among giant brown critters. One of the most thrilling trips I've ever encountered was in Katami National Park near King Salmon Alaska. There was hardly a moment in the day when a brown bear wasn't in sight. This made catching and releasing sockeye salmon pretty intense at times.
Over the years I've gotten hooked on floating the wild and secluded rivers of Alaska flyfishing for the 5 species of salmon. Many of these floats are in the heartland of brown bear country. Nothing like being in the country where you are the hunted! This trip was to the land of giant brown bears....Kodiak Island.
The Alagnak River in Alaska is home to one of the largest runs of sockeye salmon. My buddies and I timed the run perfectly. We returned home with torn up flygear, sore muscles from landing giant fish, and smiles on our faces! The Alagnak is blessed with a run of the 5 species of salmon, monster rainbows, and gorgeous greyling. There are also bald eagles, brown bears, and moose to be seen along the way.
There is only one better thing than catching salmon in Alaska...hooking monster trout in the crytal-clear streams and lakes in the Rocky Mountains. The scenery is gorgeous and so are the fish! Pick your poison..rainbows, brookies, cutthroat, and browns!
I grew up in the great state of Wyoming where there are more pronghorn antelope than people. They are spectacular animals and noted as the fasted mammal in North America. I generally hunt the rut when the herd bucks are dueling it out on the prairie. Here are a few photos and tales of my hunts.
