Just past the lookout we leave the main trail and take
to the scrub.
We have to be careful here, if we take the wrong ridge then we'll end up
in the wrong canyon, one we aren't perpared for today.
The walk along the ridge is pleasant and the pace picks up a bit. We are
eager to
reach the canyon and our excitment is growing
Finally we spot our destination. A scruby creek that cuts its way back
down
through the cliff line. At this stage it doesn't look like much but
the Wollemi National park is reknown for keeping its secretes well hidden
so we press on
The creek slowly begins to drop and the scenery starts to change.
Large overhaning cliffs cast the creek into shadows, throwing an eery light
over the massive tree ferns and giant trees that stretch straight up, tall
and
magestic, towards any patches of sky they can find.
The vegetation is so different from that of the dry eucalypt forest
on the ridge
down in the canyon every thing is ancient. Here the trees are so old that
there are vines hanging down that are just as thick as the trees themselves.
It's like stumbling into a lost valley and you half expect a dinosaur to
come
crashing out of the undergrowth at any time.
And then suddenly the canyon floor opens up and a gaping hole plunges
into
darkness.
