TIPS & TACKLE PAGE

When it comes to picking a rod and reel outfit... think BIG. Leave the ultralights & bass outfits at home. They won't do the job. You need something with a strong drag that can hold at least 100 or so yards of 20lb. test or greater. I prefer to use Penn reels (109s or 209s) matched to stout rods and 20 lb. Stren monofilament. Another benefit of a reel of this type is a bait alarm, its a wonderful feature, it gives you the opportunity to sit back and relax until a fish hits and allows you to let the fish run with the bait. Letting him run with it is important if you use large baits (I like bass & bluegills - 6" to 8" long) it gives them the chance to get it well into their mouth before setting the hook.

Tackle for shovelhead fishing is simple. You need BIG hooks, three way swivels and sinkers that match the water you are fishing (fast current, heavier sinkers). You should also match the size of the hook to the bait that you are using.

Make sure when you buy your swivels that they are rated for at least 30 lbs. When you tie your sinker line from the swivel to the sinker use a lighter line so it will easily break if the sinker gets snagged. When rigged, place a lively bait on the hook, give it a toss, and be ready to wait awhile. Hopefully you will be rewarded with a monster on the other end. If you don't have any luck, don't give up, I've sat for 10-12 hours and not got the first run. But once you've caught a 20+ lb. fish, you'll be hooked for life.
