Olympics - Women's Cross-Country

STONE MOUNTAIN, Georgia, July 30 (Reuter) - Paolo Pezzo came back from a fall in the inaugural women's mountain bike race on Tuesday to give Italy a fourth Olympic cycling gold. She finished one minute six seconds ahead of world champion Alison Sydor of Canada, who set the pace from start of the 32 km race over the rocks and woodland paths of a near-11 km circuit. American Susan De Mattei took bronze, a further 30 seconds adrift. Pezzo, world number one three years ago, was with Sydor and three others on the first lap when she crashed. Then, as Sydor relentlessly drove on, stronger riders joined the group and others fell back. Americans De Mattei and Julie Furtado challenged, but only De Mattei could match Sydor. Halfway through the race Pezzo finally overhauled the leaders and raced clear to build a lead of nearly two minutes, but Sydor, the pre-race favourite, started a hard pursuit which shook off De Mattei.

Olympics - Men's Cross-Country

ATLANTA, July 30 (Reuter) - Market gardener Bart Brentjens plucked gold from the granite and clay of Georgia International Horse Park to become the first Olympic mountain bike champion on Tuesday. Brentjens, already world champion in this cross-country sport, was the first Dutchman for 24 years to win an Olympic cycling gold. He finished two minutes 35 seconds clear of Switzerland's Thomas Frischknecht. Bronze medallist Miguel Martinez was a further 22 seconds behind. Brentjens dictated the pace from the start of the 47.7-km race when he and Italian Luca Bramati raced clear of 42 riders. Then with less than 20 kms remaining Brentjens, the tallest rider at 1.88 metres, shook off Bramati who faded out of the medals battle. Starting the final 10.6 kms lap, he was two minutes seven seconds clear of the chasing Frischknecht and Martinez. Martinez celebrated his bronze by crossing the finish line with a wheely, his front wheel raised high off the ground.
