Swim Gala '98
Saturday, 4 April  -  Jimmy Thompson Memorial Pool, Hamilton

Well here is the report that we've all been waiting for. For the quick synopsis -- we really smoked the 21st Hamilton this year. As Ainsley, Monica, Ian, Ryan, Adam, Ross, Miller, Cory, Peter and Wildman arrived at the pool the new crew swim gala colours were distributed.  BRIGHT ORANGE, REALLY BRIGHT ORANGE, (courtsey Lumberman's connections with Queen's (NEWTS). We could all see the fear and jealousy in the 21st's eyes. They quickly stole a shirt but little did they realize that the colour would only work for us.

Then the races began. With a quick start to the freestyle we took the lead on our opponents in the point department. The second race, the rover relay was the race that broke the back of the 21st. Entered into the race were 2 of our teams and one of theirs. Our number one squad included Monica, Ross, Miller and Ryan while the number two squad was made up of Ian, Adam, Cory and the Wildman. Off to a fabulous start number 1 squad was tearing through the water and was laps ahead of both the other teams.  Team 21st was only a few meters behind number 2 squad as it came down to the last racers Gord and the Wildman. Miller with his quick thinking made a last minute switch with the Wildman for anchor positions on the respective squad, thus Wildman cruised to the finish for team 1 while Miller pulled out a hard fought battle against Gord for the second place position.

At the beginning of the next race it was quite apparent that ace swimmers Brian and Gord of the 21st Hamilton had lost their competetive edge as they discussed their days as they made their attempts at Backcrawl down the pool. The Thunderbirds carried on in their excellent performances for the evening and easily clinqued first overall crew, and contributed to the capture of the overall group.

The after-competition debriefing took place at Montana's where we were joined by our token
computer geek Flynno. All in all we had an extremely fun evening and many memories to remember. Until next year calm waters and good swimming.
