Willi Beutlers"s Fine Grain Developer

(For Maximum Emulsion Speed and Sharpness)

Yields delicate, fully graded negatives, High emulsion speed and exceptional resolution.

Willi Beutler is also the inventor of Neofin (a surface developer that hardens the emulsion)

which is said to be a variation of this formula. Make two stock solutions:

Solution A

Water.……………………1000 mL.

Metol.……………………10g

Sodium Sulfite ………….50g

Solution B

Water.……………………1000 mL.

Sodium Carbonate (dry)…50g or 58g if the mono form.

To mix add 50 mL. Of A and 50 mL of B to enough pure water to make 500 mL of solution which is a 1:1:10 ratio.

Develop slow emulsions 7-10 minutes at 65 F

Medium speed emulsions 8-12 minutes at 65 F.

DO NOT USE HIGHER TEMPERATURES (See note below)

USER NOTES: Information from our experience

Place the warm water in the storage container. Add a pinch of sodium
sulfite (this amount of sodium sulfite retards the initial oxidation of
the metol. If more sulfite is added, the metol will not dissolve). Add
the metol and stir well until all of the metol dissolves. Add each
chemical in order making sure each has dissolved completely before
adding the next. Finally add cold water to bring the total volume up to
1000 ml. Be sure to stir the solution after adding the final portion of
water to ensure that it is mixed thoroughly.

Good starting points for the Beutler Formula:

EI 25-50 films- 1:1:10 dilution and 6-10 minutes @ 68 deg F.

EI 64-125 films- 1:1:10 dilution and 8-10 minutes @ 68 deg F.

EI 400 films- 1:1:10 dilution and 10-12 minutes @ 68 deg F.

Agitate continuously for first two minutes, 5 seconds every 30 seconds thereafter

The use of an acid stop-bath is NOT recommended. Instead use
a one minute rinse in water. All solutions including wash water should be at 68 F., do not use higher temperatures.
