Hiking Page and 14ers
October 20, 1997

This page is designed to express the love of hiking and exploring some of the greatest mountains in the world.  Colorado has 54 14ers or peaks that extend above 14,000 ft.  Next year I plan to start climbing the 14ers for the first time.  I will start a list of the monstrous mountains and the ones that I have climbed, plus give my own personal experiences.

McCurdy Mountain
12,165 ft.
Pike National Forest in Colorado
October 5, 1997

McCurdy Mountain is located about 6 miles east of the Taryall Reservoir in the Pike National Forest.  The trail head is number 607 and starts 6 miles south east of the Reservoir on Country road 77.  The 6 mile trail starts at around 6,000 ft. and has a light grade for the first 3 miles.  This part of the trail has great scenery and would be a great beginner trail.  Most of the lower trail is covered with aspen, large boulders and streams.  At the base of the mountain the trail becomes advanced level with steep switchbacks and climbing.  At this point the altitude starts becoming a factor with the pace.  I would recommend at least 2 quarts of water to keep from becoming dehydrated if you are planning to complete the whole trail.  This trip took 3 hours up and 2.5 hours back with a total 12 trail miles.

Flatirons Trail
Boulder Colorado
May 18, 1997

I took my first hiking trip on May 18, 1997 to the foothills of Boulder.  I started at the Flatirons Trail Head and took the Dowdy Draw Trail.  This trail is 3.4 miles out into the mountains of Boulder.  I extended the hike an extra 0.3 miles to the Mesa Trail Head, which made the round trip 7.4 miles.  I didn't take my camera on this trip because I wanted to scope it out first.  This trail is managed by a non-profit organization in Boulder.  It runs along the foothills and has some great streams and views of the valley.
