TEKWARE
Technical Overview

Tekware represents a revolution in the design of clothing for rock climbing, backpacking, trekking, hiking, and everyday outdoor pursuits. Made possible by advances in the technology of synthetic fabrics, Tekware promises to render cotton clothing virtually obsolete for outdoor use.

Cotton is fine for sedentary indoor use, but for outdoor activities it is impractical and even dangerous; cotton absorbs and retains moisture, dries at a perilously slow rate, and tears easily under stress. Using new permutations of Supplex, Cordura Plus, CoolMax, Lycra and other DuPont fabrics developed especially for The North Face, Tekware outperforms cotton in every outdoor performance criterion. Unlike cotton, it is strong, lightweight, quick-drying, shrink-resistant, wrinkle-resistant, and far less likely to tear, abrade, unravel, rot, or mildew. Tekware's exclusive VaporWick finish wicks moisture away from the body, keeping users dry and comfortable.

Designed in collaboration with both male and female rock climbers, alpinists, and professional guides, Tekware features practical, minimalist designs, gender-specific styles, and patterns cut to achieve a maximum range of motion. Every Tekware item features durable double or flatlock stitching and is constructed with the same scrupulous attention to detail that has characterized our products for close to thirty years.

New Fabrics Technologies
We worked with DuPont for two years to develop the special fabrics used in Tekware which include:
Tekware is far superior than Cotton
In tests comparing Tekware fabrics with Cotton Canvas from a leading outdoor sportswear company, Tekware proved to be higher in abrasion resistance and quicker to dry. Tekware fabrics resist tearing and fraying nearly three times longer. They dry at a rate of over 200% faster than Cotton Canvas sportswear fabric.
ToughNyl
ToughNyl, the remarkable fabric used in the Big Wall Pant, has Lycra imbedded in its vertically woven fibers to provide stretch without compromising strength. On the inside of ToughNyl fabric, acrylic loops wick moisture off the skin, while the outer Nylon layer, made of the same material used to build climbing ropes, provides unrivaled strength and durability.

Kathmandu Canvas
The Tibetan Hiking Pant and Short are constructed with Kathmandu Canvas, a special fabric blend of 330 denier Cordura and Supplex yarns that have high filament counts. This fabric has excellent tear strength and is many times more abrasion resistant that Cotton Canvas.
Sumatra Cloth
Sumatra Cloth is a 100% Supplex Nylon fabric used in our Ventilation Shirt to provide superior wicking action and excellent durability and shrink resistance. Soft, lightweight, and fast-drying, Sumatra Cloth could well be the best shirt fabric ever invented for extended use in warm climates.
Kalahari Cloth
Employed in the Packable Hiking Pant and other garments, Kalahari Cloth consists of 100% Cordura Plus Nylon, a 160 denier fabric with particularly high abrasion resistance due to the unique weave of its Cordura Plus yarn construction.
