Introduction

This file was inspired by The Riddle of Japan's Quakeproof Pagodas by Atsushi Ueda (JAPAN ECHO Vol. 22, No. 1, Spring 1995). Specifically, these keyword-searches are designed to find web documents relating to the earthquake- and storm-resistant properties of Japanese pagodas. Apparently the gawabashira (posts) act as a fulcrum for the lever-action of the taruki (roof-supporting beams, or "arms"), allowing the pagoda to move freely with wind or seismic activity. The shinbashira (central pillar) also helps to absorb energy. (Refer to "Nomenclature".)
Most of the keyword searches include the word "Pagoda" to narrow the search. Try the search without "Pagoda", or replace "Pagoda" with "Temple".
