Collins shaped the IRA out of a nest of informants, drunks and melodramatic would-be martyrs into a fighting force, an underground army skilled in sleuth and carrying on a cloak and dagger war.
The tactics evolved from a devastating failure to dislodge the British through conventional,open armed conflict. Hit and run raids stressing maximum provocation and economy of lives eventually proved to the British that no target, however well defended, was immune from attack. However can a new orthodoxy be founded on rebellion once a peaceful settlement with the Crown is obtained?
