Written as a historically accurate tribute to a little known U.S. Marine Corps Force-in-Readiness comprised of well-trained battle hardened Vietnam combat veterans and 17 and 18 year old Marines who abruptly sailed from Hawaii as part of President Lyndon B. Johnson's strategic plan to halt the North Vietnamese Army's escalating build-up of Communist forces in South Vietnam, Young Blood: a history of the 1st Battalion, 27th Marines meticulously documents the factual day to day combat actions of a unique infantry battalion that incurred approximately 70% casualties in less than seven (7) months during the height of the Vietnam War in 1968. The book's title Young Blood mirrors the fact that forty-five (45%) percent of the Marines killed-in-action in the battalion were only eighteen (18) years of age.
The Marines and Sailors of the 1st Battalion, 27th Marines performed magnificiently in battle in no small measure because of the efforts of the veteran Non-Commissioned Officers and the many Officers drawn from the Staff Non-Commissioned Officer ranks who provided the training, experience and leadership so crucial to successful small unit operations.
