01 March 2007 ~ Thursday

Yesterday afternoon some construction guys on the 12th floor of our building started pouring epoxy for some project.  They had an agreement with the building to start doing this after business hours.  They started at 3:30 p.m.  By 4:00 the fumes were so bad, we were feeling extremely lightheaded, dizzy and had difficulty breathing.  We left at 4:15.  This morning I came in and there were some residual fumes. It wasn't as overpowering as yesterday but was strong enough that, by 9:30, I was feeling lightheaded and had a sore throat and irritated nose.  The fumes, of course, were centered only in the front portion/reception/entry of the office. I was the only one having issues.  It's a bit better now.  My eye is a bit itchy and my throat/nose are still feeling raw but I'll survive.  UCC wants me to get the name of the company they used so Bossman can call them, I guess.  It does result in a slight loss in revenue if everyone has to leave the office before the end of the day.

Oh well.

I was reading about the latest computer virus that is hitting networks/servers and it made me think of something Stephen Hawking said:

"I think computer viruses should count as life.  I think it says something about human nature that the only form of life we have created so far is purely destructive.  We've created life in our own image."

So true.

02 March 2007 ~ Friday

I know this may come as a shock to you, but I sometimes don't operate with a full deck of cards.  I'm often too busy running around in my own little world (in my head, of course) that I don't often pick up on the things around me.  Granted, I am a very observant person, I'm just not always "with it."  Case in point, yesterday while crossing the street (against the light) this woman was looking at me and shaking her head.  I thought she was just being weird and as I crossed, she yelled "I'm not going to cross because I don't want to get a ticket." (or something along those lines)  I turned around only to see a police officer standing where I had just been.  Oops.  Luckily, he obviously knew that I wasn't operating on a full tank and didn't bother saying anything to me.  That saved me $94.  I've been reading online that it's fairly regularly enforced. Jaywalking in Portland:
Article. Blog.

(FYI, there were no cars around when I crossed against the light,)

If you're not watching "The Office" you should start immediately.  I had watched it in its first season, wasn't impressed and ignored it until about a month ago.  Brilliance!  I laugh so hard when I watch that show.

07 March 2007 ~ Wednesday

Last night I made
this recipe.  Instead of using whole chicken legs, I just used the drumsticks.  I also used a little extra cumin as it is the most delicious spice on earth.  It wasn't too bad.  I think next time I will roast the vegetables for 30 minutes and then add boneless chicken breasts for the rest of the time (or until the chicken is done).  I'm not a big fan of chicken legs as it reminds me that I'm eating a once living animal. Seriously, the quickest way to get me to become a vegetarian is to only feed me drumsticks.  It's something about the bone and all the veins and hard fat pieces....uh, it's just disgusting.  I made the recipe for 2 reasons:  (1) B likes drumsticks and (2) B likes cauliflower.  Finally something that I know he will eat and enjoy!  Except, he didn't eat any.  He was sick so he just went to bed without eating.  I left the chicken at home in case he wants to eat them before work. I certainly won't eat them (see the above reason). I brought the cauliflower/carrots with me to work to go with my turkey dinner.

KentuckySarah and CanadaSarah have 3 & 5 weeks (respectively) left in their pregnancies.  Yeah! Except, boo, the thing I've been working on for them is so far behind (what with recent events in our lives) that I will probably finish them around the time the kids go off to college.  I do have something for them, but it's currently sitting on my dining room table. I'm an excellent friend.

I put some pictures on flickr that I had taken back when we first brought Precious home.  So cute.  I had to scan them in and I'm not too impressed with the quality of our scanner at work.

I've also been itching to go take pictures of stuff other than hockey and the dogs.  Times like this I miss the history/buildings of Charleston.

Song of the Day:
Grace Kelly by Mika

I currently hear bagpipes.  I'm 99.9% sure I'm not hallucinating as I have not consumed anything that would cause me to hallucinate. Other than a multi-vitamin. And by multi-vitamin, I mean one-a-day multivitamin for women.

I went home sick on Wednsday and stayed home yesterday. The thing is, I don't know if I'm sick or "sick."  Currently my body feels so overwhelmingly exhausted that I'd really love to be in bed right now.  Also, my brain isn't functioning that well.  Large groups of words (called paragraphs) easily overwhelm me.  It could be that those "paragraphs" are written by the resident elitist who doesn't know how to talk in "normal" terms.  Today is our monthly off day - I took my day off on Monday. Combine that with my time spent at home sick (or "sick") and I've been at work at total of 1.25 days.  I suspect I won't work all day today as we've only had 4 calls this morning - 2 of those were from Big Cheese asking me to look up movie times.

I've decided that since I can't go on job interivews in the next two weeks (Big Cheese is on vacation) that I will not even think about how much I hate this place.

From Wednesday afternoon to this morning, I have slept a total of 26.5 hours.

This weekend marks the end of the Winter Hawks season...miserable season, at best.  Here's hoping next season will be better with our players being older.  The games this season have been rather painful.  Most times they weren't so bad - the team (even if they were losing) played with heart and spunk. Other times, they were just hard to watch.

My quest to win the Powerball jackpot continues.  Big Cheese and I have a "ladies agreement" to split the jackpot should either of us win.

Both Sarahs are convinced their babies will come at any moment.  I'm thinking of starting a betting pool.

Finally, I am happy Duke was knocked out of the NCAA tournament so early.  Even if it means I lose the office pool.

Song of the Day:
Make Love F**K War by Moby & Public Enemy (to hear a clip of this, you'll have to go to itunes)

Dear B,
I've got your update right here, yo.
Love and sloppy kisses,
M

Now that I've gotten that out of my system. (and, yes, I realize I've been slacking...if this program were a little more user friendly then I could update more often. I also realize I could go back to vox, but I didn't really care for it.)

One week ago, March 16, a new Canadian was brought into this world. His name is Aaron Michael and he's so adorable.  I would link to a picture of him but the new parents have been a bit busy taking care of a newborn.  When they get a free moment to update their flickr page, I will put in a link.

This past Sunday, Kentucky also welcomed a new resident.  Courtney Leanne is equally as adorable;
here is a link to her picture.

I'm pretty tired of being the only admin person in the office.  These people are about to drive me crazy.  Well, farther down the crazy road that I was previously.

Luckily, most will be gone next week (with the exception of Monday) so I will get a welcome break.  Big Cheese is back in the office on April 2 and I surely can't wait.  I plan to turn in my resignation letter on April 3.

B's mom might (key word being might) get to go home this Monday.  We were both surprised upon finding this out.  I had been under the impression that she would remain the care facility until at least May.  I'm sure she and B's dad will be glad she's home.  He's been very lonely without her.  This Sunday, B and I will be going over to their house to move key pieces of furniture into the garage.  The living room is really the only room that will fit her new bed and other necessary equipment.  We're adopting their coffee table which means I no longer have to plan ways to update the coffee table we have.  When we went to see her last Sunday (in all honesty, I cannot remember going over there even though I know we did because we went to the final hockey game of the season afterwards...hmmm...). I do remember, though, at one visit (I can only assume it was this past Sunday) that I was looking at her stump and was amazed when she moved it.  It seemed very robotic. I don't know how quite to explain it.  Certainly when you lose part of a limb, the remaining part is still - obviously - attached to your body and will function in - almost - the same manner/capacity as it did when it was whole.  But seeing her leg move - which would not have been a big deal had it been her entire leg - seemed very strange and foreign.  They took half of the stitches out and hope to take the other half out on a future visit (I can't remember the timetable).

Bossman has been tolerable this week.  He was fussy one day but I just ignored him. When he did talk to me I tried to be as pleasant and accomodating as possible.  I also discovered that if you give him a cherry turnover (and, no, that's not slang) that he will be in a good mood.  It also works with donuts and chocolate chip cookie dough.

I think that's all from here.  I'll have another update sometime next year.  Oh yeah, some lucky bastard in Milwaukie, Oregon, bought MY winning Powerball ticket.  Jerk.

23 March P.S.

If you go
here you can see a photo of Brad with the Winter Hawks' Victor Sjodin.  He was presenting him with some award.  If you look to the right of Brad - near the #26 on his jersey - you will see half of Bob's face.  You can try zooming, but it is poor in quality.  I was going to scan it and post it on flickr, but it's copywritten (writed?) and I felt weird about doing that. Even though, really?  It's not like anyone is going to steal the freaking photo.  Enjoy! (it's one of my favorite pictures of B).  I was going to email the guy and ask for "permission" (please, sir, will you be so kind as to grant me permission to post a photograph of my husband for my friends and family to view?) but I've met the guy who takes the photographs and he's not very friendly or approachable.  He has an air of "better-than-you" about him.  Or maybe that's just me.  I was sitting next to him having a conversation with the person with work for/with at the games and he mentioned the password for his site (at the time it was 20056002) and he saw me sitting there and made it a point of saying "but I change the password often."  I know it was directed at me. After all, I'm big on going into other people's sites and stealing their stuff!  Asswipe. Anyway, for $2, a copy of B can be yours!

27 March 2007 ~ Tuesday

Song of the Day:
Fidelity by Regina Spektor

It's only Tuesday? Seriously?  This has been such a long week!

My To-Do List:
1. Finish (actually, fully start and finish) the "special thing" for the Sarah - which really should be for Aaron and Courtney now that the babies have been born. I had, what, 4 months to do this project before they were born.  I'm on top of things!
2. Clean the crap out of the garage. Take said crap to the Salvation Army or dump. (I hate throwing things away that could be recycled..some of the stuff, though, even the SA/Goodwill won't take.)
3. Clean the house.  Scrub the baseboards.
4. Paint bathroom, bedroom and maybe the computer room if B will let me near "his space" (he chose the color, after all)
5. Fix "crack" in ceiling from roof leak.
6. Clean siding. SInce I can't use a powerwasher on LP siding, I will have to find some possibly environmentally unfriendly chemical. Bah.
7. Patch lawn. Seriously, grass?! WTF!?  Why must you insist on having bare spots. Piece of crap.  I'm kidding. I love you lawn. Please grow, spread, be fertile!
8. Get rid of the reamining 5 shrubs.
9. Finish the retaining wall.
10. Don't even get me started on our rotting deck.
11. Plant some things to replace the shrubs.  Make them habitat friendly.  Attract even more frogs, snakes and birds for the beagle to kill.
12.  Get an estimate for a roof/gutters.
13. Get a shield thing to go around the pipe from the furnace to the roof. The hot water heater guy (2 years ago?) said it was a hazard and must be double insulated. Get on it, will ya!
14.  Why is the washer squeaking?
15.  What is that horrible smell from the dryer? Is it going to catch on fire??
16.  Clean the front porch. Pray it doesn't need replacing.
17. Convince B he needs shelves in the computer room for his collectibles.
18. Finish putting DVDs into books and recycle the jewel cases.
19.  Buy a winter coat.
20.  Buy some new "commuting" shoes.
21.  Some new underwear would be nice.
22.  Summon courage/strength to go to the mall and accomplish 19 - 21.
23. I hate the mall.
24.  Walk the dogs.

Things I will actually do:
Maybe 1 and 3, if you're lucky.

Song of the Day:
Naughty Girl by Beyonce

I would like to thank my dear, sweet, sleep-deprived husband for giving me this wonderful sore throat. It rocks.

I have discovered a love of photo-blogging.  If you check out my
flickr page you will probably see snippets of my day. I don't do this every day, however.

Once again I used too much buffalo wing sauce on my chicken tneders.  Wow..that's way hotter than medium.  My scalp is sweating!  I should have brought more salad...

I have rediscovered my love for Tetris.  Once again, I am back to dreaming in Tetris.

This is a lame post.
