What is Scouting?
Ever since 1910 when Lord Robert Baden-Powell started the program known as the Boy Scouts,
young men and women have grown into better members of their society. The program which strives
to develop better character, citizenship and fitness in the youth of today is more than just
helping old ladies cross the street and selling popcorn, however. Scouting is much more than that.
Scouting is a brotherhood of youths and adults alike, all bound under one
firm oath and law. Scouting is the program which is shaping youth into the
leaders of tomorrow. It is a program which maintains its backgrounds of
outdoor knowlege, teaching young Scouts about treating nature and the
world with respect. Scouting is also the program I have spent just about
all my life in.
A little about me ...
My life in Scouting began at the age of five in the Tiger Cub program. Since then,
I've advanced all the way through Cub Scouts, Webelos, the Arrow of Light, and through
the Boy Scout ranks to become a proud Eagle Scout. If there were one thing I could credit
for shaping me into the person I am, it is Scouting. It has helped me develop a set of values
and traits others admire. Scouting has helped me to maintain a positive outlook on life.
My experiences include becoming a brotherhood member of the Order of the Arrow, visiting
the Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico, attending the World Jamboree in Holland and the
National Jamboree at Fort A.P. Hill in Virginia, as well as countless campouts and camporees
around the fine state of Vermont.
Now, having advanced as far as I could go as a youth, I must resign to pass the
skills I have learned on to others. The past six summers of my life have been spent in a
quaint little Vermont town aptly named Eden at the Mount Norris Scout Reservation. There, I worked
as Cub Scout camp craft/field sports director, Scoutcraft Director, Ecology/Conservation Director,
Camp Commissioner, and Program Director. Presently, I am the district executive with
the Green Mountain Council serving the Scouts of southeastern Vermont. This summer, I will once
again return to Mt. Norris as the Program Director.
